MEXICO CITY, July 6, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Pro-life groups in Mexico are celebrating today the election of Felipe Calderon as the new President of Mexico. Calderon, from the ruling National Action Party (PAN), was until recently thought a long-shot against socialist Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party which supports abortion.
Initial results form Sunday's elections were reported July 3, but with the extreme closeness of the vote a recount was demanded immediately by Obrador. The recount confirmed Calderon as the winner. The official recount had Calderon coming away with just over 236,000 votes more than Obrador in an election where over 41 million votes were cast.
Obrador is still unwilling to accept defeat and is now clamouring for a ballot-by-ballot recount.
The Inter Press Service News Agency described Calderon saying: "He is known to be a devout, conservative Catholic, attending daily mass, and has not shied from acknowledging his stances against abortion, condom use, homosexual relations and euthanasia."
In an interview with the Knight Ridder news service earlier this year Calderon said "On the subject of abortion, I am pro-life, and I also see that it is a matter clearly regulated by law, and most of all in judicial terms well settled."
Calderon, a relatively young (43) Harvard grad with three children all under 10, and a wife who is also a PAN legislator did not shy away from his faith during the elections. "I am a man of convictions who wants what is best for his children and those of all Mexicans," he said during the campaign.
May God bless his presidency and may our Blessed Mother shield and protect him with her mantle.
Thanks to Our Lady of Guadalupe, and best wishes to the gentleman. He's going to need lots of divine assistance!
wow I didn't know that. Thanks for the thread!
May Our Lady of Guadalupe guide and guard Calderon during the turmoil over his election. Amen

The things that public news stories don't include!!!
"...Be assured that I will be most grateful and will reward you, because I will make you happy and worthy of recompense for the effort and fatigue in what you will obtain of what I have entrusted. Behold, you have heard my mandate, my humble son; go and put forth all your effort.
Good news. I was kinda worry about this election, especially when the leftist Lopez Obrador looked like he was winning.
Perhaps this is the one thread where I can post that I share President Bush's optimism for the contribution that Mexican immigrants can make as Americans without getting flamed.
Viva Cristo Rey!
"Perhaps this is the one thread where I can post that I share President Bush's optimism for the contribution that Mexican immigrants can make as Americans without getting flamed."
The religious threads are more genteel. While I personally disagree with President Bush on his immigration policy, I'm not going to try to insult those who see it differently.
This new President might offer some hope in improving the situation in Mexico. And in my view, that's what's really driving illegal immigration. If Mexico was a better place to live and work, fewer people would be leaving. I haven't noticed hordes of immigrants leaving Switzerland and the UK of late.
Something that heartens me about this fellow is that he has a young family. He's more likely to be invested in the future. Time will tell whether he's able/interested in improving Mexico. A strong religious background certainly helps.
We could have worse candidates for an immigration wave. These people will be a blessing.
...and all their base are belong to us, anyway.
Absolutely!
And this is the one thread where we can all acknowledge and thank Our Lady of Guadalupe for her contribution in this election.
Isn't that the TRUTH!!!!
Hoping for the best, and that he will turn things around!
Remember Fox marched under a banner of Our Lady of Guadalupe, then when elected married a rich divorcee out of the Church.
"We could have worse candidates for an immigration wave. These people will be a blessing."
Agreed on both points. My disagreement with current immigration policies have more to do with the numbers and methodology rather than those who are choosing to immigrate. I question our ability to effectively assimilate large numbers of additional immigrants. And I have a real problem with having an inefficient legal immigration system on the one hand, and a "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" system of illegal immigration on the other.
In any case, this thread is not about immigration and I'm not interested in hijacking it. I agree with your basic points that these are good people. I've lived in a predominantly Mexican community in a border state. My personal experience was that with few exceptions, we're talking hard-working, moral, family-oriented people that I was glad to be acquainted with.
How is Calderon any different from Fox on this issue? I'll believe he's "pro-life" when I see it. Jesse Jackson, Ted Kennedy, Dick Durbin, and Al Gore were all elected as "pro-life" candiates.
