What support is there for the claim that God spoke to all the Jewish people at the foot of Mount Sinai?
Who did God give the Torah to at Mount Sinai? Most people reply, "God gave the Torah to Moses."
And what were the Jewish people doing while Moses was receiving the Torah? "Worshipping the Golden Calf."
Correct answers -- but NOT according to the Bible.
The above answers come from Cecil B. DeMille's classic film, "The Ten Commandments." Amazing the impact one movie can have on the Jewish education of generations of Jews. It's a great film, but DeMille should have read the original.
The version found in the Torah is quite different. The Torah's claim is that the entire people heard God speak at Mount Sinai, experiencing national revelation. God did not just appear to Moses in a private rendezvous; He appeared to everyone, some 3 million people. This claim is mentioned many times in the Torah.

Cecil B. DeMille's classic film, "The Ten Commandments."
That's because it was based on the Christian Bible and not the Torah.
See Exodus chapter 32
My personal view is the first book of the law to be written was Deuteronomy, during the reign of King Josiah. The "history of the Jews" was later expanded after that, to Samuel, then to Judges and later to the Occupation narratives, and then to the Exodus.
I also have the view what Mark was written first, and Matthew was expanded from Mark, with the help of a LXX scroll.
In like manner, the Quran was written hundreds of years after the putative Mohamet, which in part is why there are fewer variants of the Quran than other religious texts. During the time of "Mohamet" there was no written form of Arabic. The Syrio-Aramaic characters were used, and Christian religious writings were extensively plagerized during the composition of the Quran.
But the gospels translated by Joseph Smith Jr.: they were miraculously preserved and translated. No doubt there at all. (sarcasam lite on)
Your mileage may vary.
I think you need to go back to Sunday School. The Torah is contained in every one of those books you refer to as "the Christian Bible." The Torah consists of the biblical books: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
You should also look earlier in Exodus specifically at Exodus 19:9 (The L-rd also told him, "I am coming to you in a dense cloud, so that when the people hear me speaking with you, they may always have faith in you also.") and Exodus 20:19 just after the "Ten Commandments," had been spoken by G-d. (When the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the trumpet blast and the mountain smoking, they all feared and trembled. So they took up a position much farther away)
The Golden Calf incident itself is consistent with the Israelites having themselves heard the law because otherwise it wouldn't have been a sin (yet) to build the calf as an object to worship.

This is contrary to immemorial Jewish Tradition, which holds that the Torah preexisted the world and was dictated to Moses letter-for-letter, who wrote it down.
Then was it before, or after, this that they were worshipping the Golden Calf?
Before.
Didn't expect a straight answer to what was basically a smarmy insult, did you?
If you are so threatened by the message of Shavu`ot, perhaps you should avoid these threads.
Didn't expect a straight answer to what was basically a smarmy insult, did you?
As a matter of fact, it was simply a straight question. I did not realise that mentioning the worship of the golden calf is a "smarmy insult." This whole thread, is supposed to be about the chronology of events, so I was trying to get it straight.
I'll take your word for it. Amazingly, there are chr*stians who think that the fact that Israel deviated from the Torah at the incident of the `Eigel Masekhah somehow implies Orthodox Jews have similarly sinned by not forsaking the Torah. Unbelievable, isn't it?
It would be so nice on these threads if people were kind enough to provide information without insult.
What is it about these forums that seem to give people license to do nothing but insult one another?
Debate is good. I enjoy learning and appreciate insights that could further education, and I could do so with enjoyment if it weren't for the insults.
Any information that could be enlightening is negated by those who feel they are so above others. It's really too bad.
I guess it's a good thing I didn't really try to cut you down. You have pretty thin skin for a guy who jumps in with line that reeks of "Us Christians know better than dem Jooos," and jumps in rather uninformed or so it seems to me.

Discuss the issues all you want but do not make it personal.
I wonder why the Torah would reference fins, if before the world that fish didn't exist, or why the Torah would reference split hooves, if pigs didn't exist?
It seems to me to encapsulate a lot of good advice, if you are in a stone age culture.
