See comments toward bottom on Bishop Trautman heading the liturgy committee--If you're not aware of His Excellecy's views on the liturgy, this is a travesty for anyone hoping to see a quick death to the kumbayah, let's all hold hands liturgical styles still en vogue with the liturgical establishment. His Excellency has openly stated that "Liturgicam Authenticam" (the Vatican document on liturgical translations approved by the Holy Father focusing on the need for correct and reverent translations) is a "shame". http://www.americamagazine.org/gettext.cfm?articleTypeID=1&textID=1162&issueID=347

He is known for opposing any efforts to reform the reform, considering them a "step backwards." In short, for those of you who want to see more reverence, awe, and fidelity to the text in the liturgy, this is among the worst possible choices. How the US bishops would appoint a bishop who openly opposes the Vatican on liturgical matters as president of their liturgical committee is beyond me--Where are the orthodox bishops on this??!!

Please flood your bishop's office with complaints about this selection and let them know that the time for the do-it-yourself-liturgy is over.

Bp. Troutman?

Uhmmm...hate to be picky, but that's Bp. Troutperson!

Liturgical language must reflect diversity and reject patriarchal patterns of injustice.

Won't do me any good here in Albany NY. This diocese is run by one of the most liberal bishops in the US.

For those unfamiliar with Bishop Trautman's stance on liturgy, the following are comments he made to Adoremus Bulletin, one year ago.

"As the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy fades in time, is it also fading in influence?" he asked. "Do we recognize a pullback from the liturgical principles, a lessening of collaboration, a return to devotionalism rather than Eucharistic celebration? Is there a liturgical backsliding that causes us to be disillusioned, dejected, disheartened? We need to recall the founders of the American Liturgical Movement. These liturgical pioneers did not give up and we must not give up. We must not surrender the progress made at Vatican II".

Bishop Trautman to Liturgists: "Keep up your courage"

Remain calm! These bishops do not make policy; they simply recommend. The days are numbered for these aging prelates. Console yourself with the knowledge and understanding that young people today, are drawn more to the traditional aspects of the church.

And what do you suggest that people tell the bishops?

All those who have made claims that "things are getting better," please report after class for remedial instruction. Things are not getting any better. This Trautman is one of the very worst of the bunch. He will make an excellent sidekick to the new President of the USCCB who believes the 52% vote gives him a mandate for further coverups of corruption, further stealing of the money and property of the faithful, further feather-bedding of the love nests of the sodomites in charge, and generally filing for bankruptcy not just for his diocese but for the entire American Catholic Church.

While he is busy robbing Catholics blind, Trautman will be stealing their Catholic liturgical heritage. I'm afraid the "do it yourself" Mass is far from over with Trautman running the liturgy committee.

But let's not forget that the Catholic Church is considered reactionary in Europe. The Europeans are far ahead of us on the downward slope. Signs of a "new springtime" breaking out are conspicuous by their absence everywhere in the world.

If there is anyone left who still believes that things are going to get better if we only stay the course, if the past 40 years of auto-demolition of the Church have taught you nothing, what will it take to wake you up to reality? You can look forward to 4 more years of status quo from your bishops. Until we see people like Skylstad and Trautman tarred and feathered, the Church will continue moving in only 1 direction -- towards the brink of extinction.

Let them go. We might as well get this schism over with.

I think I've seen him interviewed before. Is his demeanor/affect kind of "swishy" ? Couldn't think how else to phrase it.

Sedavacantanism never looked so good!

Why do we waste more time, which I have been doing, waiting for things to get better.

In 1950 The Soviet Union began larding the semaries with communist agents.

Later, they were joined by homosexuals who worked in conceert with these God=less atheistic communists!

What do we have today?

Folk, clown and prancing priests on the "altar."

If Catholics today think this is not enough, then we've indeed had it!

Do the right thing, support those who are doing it right, and say novenas to St. Charles Borromeo and all the other sainted bishops.

And be glad that Bishops are basically in control in their own diocese, and if you have a good one, praise God, and if you don't pray a lot and offer your grief up as an offering.

And know this: Time is on the side of the right, because those bishops grow ever closer to replacement, and the young men in the seminary are growing further and further away from Kumbaya, and closer to the truth of of Jesus

do not forget that the USCCB has NO authority -each Bishop presides over his own...

If Bishop Trautman publishes dissenting material or attempts to enforce such it will only contribute to his impending correction...

-sometimes the best way to hang one in need of hanging is to provide them plenty of rope...

Wow, Troutman and Skystad partnered up. Now that's dangerous. Well, it would be dangerous, but there is little more for them to destroy.

I say we start planting rumors in the ears of some of the bishops in hopes that they get into a catfight and scratch eachother to death.

What good will protest do? None of this matters--it was the bishops who elected this prelate and it is the bishops who want him where he is. These men are not true Catholics--nor is the Mass truly Catholic which they push on the faithful.

This is horrible, horrible news for those of us who are more traditional Catholic on matters liturgical.

Edited for complete disclosure.

Great news!

In light of all the crappy news we've heard about these nominations, our wonderful Bishop of Phoenix Most Rev. Thomas Olmstead was nominated for Chairman of Priestly Formation!

We've had some wonderful new priests come into our diocese in the last couple of years. If he's going to head this Chair for the next three years, there IS hope!

This is awesome news!

A draft letter for consideration:

Excellency,

It is with serious concern that I write concerning the nomination of Bishop Trautman as head of the USCCB Committee on the Liturgy. I urge you to oppose this nomination given Bishop Trautman’s open condemnations of Liturgiam Authenticam as stated in America issue 12, Volume 185, October 22, 2001. I believe that to appoint as head of the Liturgy Committee a Bishop who disagrees with the Vatican on the Liturgy is non-sequitur.

Bishop Trautman’s musing is clear in its defense of a thirty year custom, but gives no honor to the two thousand years of preceding tradition and reasoning. While Bishop Trautman’s parsing of words in the liturgy may be accommodating to contemporary secular society, it is in open defiance of the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments. To argue: “In many aspects the document is a disappointment; its compass needs to be reset.” is to place Catholics in the United States at odds with the Universal Church.

I have no doubt that this Bishop truly seeks to serve God and the faithful, but given these extremist views, I do not believe he is the proper choice for this important post. I believe that vocations to the priesthood—one of our most dire challenges—are directly proportional to the respect and reverence within our celebration of the Eucharist. Liturgical abuses drag the sacrament toward the errors of the reformationist rites; lacking distinction, there is then no inspiration of call to Holy Orders.

Excellency, I again beseech you to consider these thoughts in your deliberations.

---It may not change things, but in the tradition of St. Francis, Patron of Catholic action, we clarify to the bishops our knowledge and scrutiny.

Some info about the Bishop Donald Trautman vote at the USCCB on 11/16/2004:

Bishop John Kinney moved that Bp Trautman's name be placed on the ballot with Cdl Rigali and Bp Vigneron for a vote to select the next Chairman of the Liturgy Committee.

Bp Kinney had written "seconds" of his motion from the following 5 bishops:

Bp Stephen Blaire - Stockton CA - A=62 - PC= Cdl Mahony, PCC= Bp Ziemann
Bp Donald Pelotte - Gallup NM - A=59 - PC= Abp Robert Sanchez, PCC= Anthony Pilla
Bp Gerald Wilkerson - Aux LA - A=65 - PC= Cdl Mahony
Bp Victor Balke - Crookston Minn. - A=73 - PC= Abp John R. Roach
Bp Alexander Salazar - Aux LA - A=54 - PC= Cdl Mahony
---

BP Kinney - Saint Cloud, Minn. - A=67 - PC= Abp John R. Roach

Notes:
"PC" = Principal Consecrator of the ordination of that bishop.
"PCC" = Principal Co-Consecrator.
"A" = Age.
Cardinal Mahony was the principal Consecrator of 3 of the above bishops.
Abp Roach was the PC of 2 of the above bishops.
Abp Sanchez and Bp Pilla have had serious problems.
Bishops Kinney and Balke are both from Minnesota.
The name "Blaire" might be Blair but probably not.

The above data was obtained Here and from watching/taping EWTN.

The 1st ballot votes were: Rigali 90, Vigneron 32, Trautman 115
The 2nd ballot votes were: Rigali 105, Vigneron 7, Trautman 127= 53%
51%+ is required.

It looks to me that Mahony and/or his followers were behind this floor nomination of Trautman. They probably asked Kinney to lead the way and provide another willing follower to help keep the focus off of LA and Mahony.
