Some Virginia Episcopalians, angered by actions the denomination has taken in support of homosexuals, are showing their displeasure by cutting back on donations and pledges.

Giving to the Diocese of Virginia, the largest in the Episcopal Church USA, is about $230,000 short of the diocese's $4 million-plus budget for 2003, said the Rt. Rev. Peter James Lee, the diocese's bishop.

This bishop says he is only $230,000 behind out of 4 million, but later in the article they state they are running 18% behind in the parishes. 18% of 4 million is a lot more than $230,000. Can anyone explain this?

While the first temptation is to say 'heretics can't do math and neither can reporters' I'll...er never mind, anyway the heretical ecusa leadership is desperately trying to cover up how much their budget has shrunk now that those 'few awful conservatives' aren't sending in their tithes... I guess in this case they were just hoping no one would notice....

I believe he is stating the reduced inflow of cash that the national office has received(down 230K) and then commenting on the overall decrease that parishes are facing, across the board at 18%. Most of the parishes I know have established their giving to the diocese and national church at between 10 and 20%, so if they are feeling a pinch of an 18% drop in donations, they are going to reduce the percentage they send to their diocesan and national offices, just to make sure they can pay their own light bills.

The Bishop said:

"Giving to the Diocese of Virginia, the largest in the Episcopal Church USA, is about $230,000 short of the diocese's $4 million-plus budget for 2003, said the Rt. Rev. Peter James Lee, the diocese's bishop.

In addition, pledges for the 2004 year are running about 18 percent behind last year at this time, he said."

This means that people did not contribute $230,000 that they had promised for 2003, about a 5% shortfall, AND they appear to be reducing what they promise in 2004 by a lot more, 18%.

I've been watching for information like this--based on my own church, I think this is fairly wide-spread throughout all diocese. I think the revisionists are hoping to slog through a tough year. What they don't get IMHO, is that this is the tip of the iceberg, and next year might be worse. A lot of very unhappy people--like me--are hanging on, not ready to throw a life time of devotion, commitment and service away, but not seeing much about which to be encouraged.

He's also comparing numbers from 2003 and pledges for 2004. Those figures always differ.
