Additional data: Anglican Communion - Commission Members
private discussion list | 30 October 2003 | anonymous

The following analysis of the members of the Commission was provided to me from someone who has been watching things Anglican for a number of years - I am posting it here by permission of the author who (for rather obvious reasons) wishes to remain anonymous. Anyone with further observations on Commission members is welcome to post said observations in this thread. --------------------------------------------------

* Archbishop Robin Eames, Primate of All Ireland, Chairman, A company man. He first went left, than right at the Primates meeting. A corporatist and someone of whom I would be leery.

* The Revd Canon Alyson Barnett-Cowan, Director of Faith, Worship and Ministry, the Anglican Church of Canada, Left--a staff officer of Michael Peers

* Bishop David Beetge, Dean of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa, A weak conservative voice. Not in lockstep, thank goodness with Ndungane. Not, however, a strong evangelical.

* Professor Norman Doe, Director of the Centre for Law and Religion, Cardiff University, Wales, A dry as dust lawyer ... pedantic, but no known biases.

* Bishop Mark Dyer, Director of Spiritual Formation, Virginia Theological Seminary, USA, Left, vain, and a tool of 815

* Archbishop Drexel Gomez, Primate of the West Indies, Good guy 1

* Archbishop Josiah Iduwo-Fearon, Archbishop of Kaduna, the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Good guy 2

* The Revd Dorothy Lau, Director of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, Don't know her ... Archbishop Peter Kwong, in the end came down with the Conservatives in London ... I would assume she would follow "orders" from home.

* Ms Anne McGavin, Advocate, formerly Legal Adviser to the College of Bishops of the Scottish Episcopal Church, I assume left but have no first hand knowledge

* Archbishop Bernard Malango, Primate of Central Africa, Good guy 3

* Dr Esther Mombo, Academic Dean of St Paul's United Theological Seminary, Limuru, Kenya, Good guy 3-1/2 (needs to be watched)

* Archbishop Barry Morgan, Primate of Wales, Problematic ... on record wanting to do nothing, but not an advocate of the gay agenda. A corporatist

* Chancellor Rubie Nottage, Chancellor of the West Indies, Unknown.

* Bishop John Paterson, Primate of Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, and Chairman of the Anglican Consultative Council, Trouble. Quiet but hard left.

* Dr Jenny Te Paa, Principal of College of Saint John the Evangelist, Auckland, New Zealand, Shrilly hard left. Perpetual victim state of mind.

* Bishop James Terom, Moderator, the Church of North India, Solid but very quiet. Will vote the right way, but will not speak up (language issue perhaps?)

* Bishop N Thomas Wright, Bishop of Durham, the Church of England. Good guy 4, but can be idiosyncratic

The legal advisor, John Rees, is trouble. He has been a constant nag and scold for the do-nothing position. He is a mediocre lawyer who has fallen into a situation that places him over his head. Not a great mind nor a scholar, he will go the safe route and push for doing nothing.

Thank you. Excellent research, as always.

So we have 5, maybe 6 orthodox members.
5 neutral or middle of the road.
3 that we don't know much about. Although I'd bet the W. Indies chancellor, like the Hong Kong representative, is conservative based on "orders from home".
3 hard left, although the Virginia may have undue influence since he's the only American on the commission.
Plus a left but marginally competent counsel.

If you look at it that way, the numbers don't look so bad, depending on the extent to which the minority may deadlock the commission and keep anything from getting done.
