A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay, or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Hurricane War Stories

Tell us your Isabel war story here, if indeed you have electricity to do so.

Well, it was not the prettiest radar image for weather.

Having spent the last week staring at loads of NOAA weather graphs, all my block has to show for the event is a tree right across from my house that basically aimed at my house but was too small to hit it. Two of my neighbors helped me saw it away and we opened up our street for business. I'm not certain, but it may well be illegal to clear a downed tree on public ground in this city!

The winds around here never got too bad, their worst in DC was around midnight:

But that was strong enough to leave many homes without power, and I and many other volunteers worked our muscles sore after the storm distributing ice to powerless neighbors. My hurricane relief work will have to constitute my excuse for missing the DC Chapter's meeting Sunday, but rumor has it tgslTakoma was out of electricity and so cooked up a storm of food for the meeting!

Well, that hurricane behaved just like a Democrat, didn't it? Mindlessly destructive and noisy!
Hmm, sounds like a top ten list. Share with us your hurricane war story and I'll share with you my hurricane top ten list.

Top Ten Reasons that Isabel was a Democrat

10. It was an expensive mess.

 9. The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit didn't try to stop it.

 8. It received an inordinate amount of press attention.

 7. It harmed rich and poor alike.

 6. It behaved irrationally.

 5. It favored the East Coast of the U.S.

 4. It gave federal government workers two days off for free.

 3. Its statistics were overblown, inaccurate, and highly misleading.

 2. It was mindlessly noisy.

and the number one reason why Isabel is a Democrat . . . .  1. It thrived on hot air.

Beautiful angel story.

I'm convinced my angel was a dog that showed up on my parents' doorstep Christmas Eve 1993. No time to tell the entire story, but "Teddy" (named by nieces and nephews on Christmas day) got loose and ran away in the fall 1994 -- right before I sold my home and had to move into a "no pets allowed" mobile home community.

I could have found a home for him. Instead, when he ran away, he disappeared into thin air. (I'd worked at the PD until 1992, so all of the patrolmen at that time knew me -- and my dog. Nobody ever saw him anywhere!) Teddy helped me in too many ways for his appearance in my life to have been an accident.

Good article, but FTH, why is there a headless man in the picture of your street standing by the car in a grey shirt?

I remember Hugo. Our power had already been out for several hours when he came into the harbour. Our phone lines here are buried and my brother the minister chose that time to call me and tell me about the eye.

Civil Defense - This is not a drill, this is not a drill...
Charlie Hall, much beloved weather man for since 1950's being forcefully taken out of the Channel 5 studio downtown.

Hugo was a cat 4 when he came ashore.

If I could tell the people up and down the east coast that have no power anything, it is to have patience. It will take time. Get to know your neighbors. Let your kids play outside in the fresh air. Have fun. Understand that this is the a time to grow and learn.

There are lessons to be learned and we shouldn't forget them. A cat two can do damage also.

Hint: Calling the power company isn't going to get it on any faster. They are doing the best that they can and you should be grateful for the work they are doing. There are a lot of people from out of state that have come to help y'all and they are doing the best that they can do.

I will tell you, if some of the interviews that I have seen with you people up north are any indication, y'all expected the world to rotate around you and have electricity and water immediately.

Well, I hate to tell you, there are going to be places that won't have power and water much before Thanksgiving or Christmas.

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Not only are the power lines in your neighborhoods down, but there was most probably damage to the transformers and those giant power lines that must be repair first. Thank your lucky stars that you have a roof over your heads.

The extra crew that are coming are from Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, etc. They are doing the best that they can. There is also North Carolina to think about.

Sorry.

The power company here hires Ashphunel (I think it's spelled correctly) and other tree trimming firms. They work year round day after day.

It's strange to see a tree with a flat top of one that has mohawk on one side and nothing on the other. The giant power lines always have crews working on them. Transformers get blown up everday by birds and small animals oppossums, squirrels, raccoons etc.

Every transformer in this country has to be replaced because of pbc or initial stuff. The replacements are very expensive .

I completely understand that there are a lot of people coming in to our area to help out. Believe me, we're very grateful.

But you should understand some of the frustration here in the Richmond area. Over 400,000 people in the Richmond area alone lost power. Over 1M throughout the state. Dominion Power knew for at least a week that this storm was going to hit Virginia and hit it really hard. As of yesterday, just a shade under 200,000 in Richmond are still without power. That is less than 50% restored in a week. Compare that to Northern Virginia who is 90% restored (they'll be 100% restored today) and Tidewater who is about 75% restored. Why is Richmond getting the short of the stick here? That's why we're frustrated in Richmond.

Also, FEMA has admitted that it completely blew it with regard to having enough water available. I know many people who were standing in lines for hours and hours trying to get some drinking water. Thankfully, the boil water advisory has been lifted.

I am also very aware of the fact that there are people who will be without power and water for a long time. My sister and her family are some of those people.

I haven't seen the interviews on TV that you're talking about. Most people I know are soldiering on through all this and we're all helping each other. But I think our frustration is understandable when compared to the rest of the state.

I'm off my rant now. I didn't think I was being too whiney about this but I guess I came off that way. So, my apologies for being whiney but no apologies for being frustrated.

No, you weren't. I lived through Hugo, which was a category 4 storm and the damage was horrendous compared to a category 2 storm. Hugo also didn't move as fast as Isabel. The power companies were prepared as they could be with Hugo, but you can never be prepared totally for any emergency.

Perhaps we just know how to prepare better down here, both mentally and physically. I don't know.
