HRC Under Fire (Fresno Mayor expects litigation as a result of HRC smear of FR?)

HRC Under Fire

A pair of controversies could mean double the debate inside Fresno city council chambers this week, while a special city commission and some council members are feeling the heat.

A lot of the political tension has centered around an upsetting e-mail, and more recently, a news release that calls a local conservative organization a, "hate group."

Now, the future of Fresno's Human Relations Committee is on the line.

Fresno mayor Alan Autry went on TV for "Ask The Mayor," but Autry says he has questions of his own for the city's Human Relations Commission.

It sent out a news release about rallies planned by the "Free Republic," Calling the local conservative organization a hate group.

Now, Autry wants the HRC out of commission, at least for now, "I'm going to do my best to suspend operations until we find out who thought it appropriate to send out a release with city staff ... to call a group a hate group."

The HRC's chairwoman, Debbie Reyes wasn't available for an interview. But, in a written statement, Reyes said, "The intention of the alert was to merely alert the public to say away from a potentially volatile situation."

Still, Autry says the HRC release was irresponsible, "Factor that in with the fact that you spend $193,000 to fund this, liability issues, litigation ... all of those things come into play."

Council president Tom Boyajian supports the HRC, "It was bad information ... they should've done their homework ... but I don't think that warrants wiping out the Human Relations Commission."

Boyajian may also butt heads with conservatives at city hall on another issue. As Action News first reported, he'll present a resolution Tuesday regarding council members conduct. This, after Jerry Duncan wrote what some considered a threateing e-mail about the Human Relations Commission.

Duncan declined to comment Sunday, but he has apologized for the e-mail.

Boyajian says his resolution will not go so far as to officially censure Duncan. He says legally, the council can't force Duncan to resign.

Boyajian will suggest a possible seminar to improve sensitivity to minority groups.

We got protected status ( with three police cars being present) because of the HRC's notice to the police and channel 24 news that we were a "HATE GROUP". .

SO -Yes, we got protection, but not the classification you are referring to.

YES, channel 24 interviewed Jim and Justamy, it was -- you know ,film at 11- the next day at our picnic, channel 26 came and taped us having our picnic--- both channels missed all the violence and hate being displayed (not).

Hey, doesn't he look like the guy from In the Heat of the Night?

Oh no way, I typed the question above and then did a search on IMDB - it IS HIM!!!

Where are they now - (January 2002) Mayor of Fresno, California. Term expires in 2005.

Priceless. I always loved him on that show, the big strong manly honest way about him. :)

What an insult to the active duty FReepers.
I'd bet the City of Freno has no problem taking money from the military,
yet they condone this attack on the military and those who support them.
You know they have seen your support the troops signs long enough to know what you represent.
It's also an insult to the real Americans in Fresno.

Bump! You also know there are non-Freeper Fresno witnesses to speak on behalf of Freepers in court.

If I lived in Fresno, I'd drive by the Freepers every Friday to honk in support of the troops, the war effort, the President and these patriots who are willing to give of their time every single Friday to rally their fellow Fresno neighbors - at least - maybe even bring chocolate chip cookies. (^;

To do a class-action suit you have to 1) believe in it, 2) believe it is worth doing, 3) believe in our jurisprudence system to the point that restitution or restoration of one's reputation is coming. I just don;t think the majority of FReepers are there.

You could be right about that, as far as a class-action suit goes. However, those of us who have been peacefully waving flags and holding signs to support our troops for two years on the corner of Blackstone and Shaw, and those of us who organized and attended the "hate rally picnic" last Saturday, WERE and ARE there.

The media and police were alerted and we were called (potentially) violent members of a hate group by a commission appointed and funded by the City of Fresno. This is a serious case of defamation of character. Several of us are looking into our options. Our reputation as citizens and business owners in the community has been put into serious jeopardy and we are not going to tolerate this kind of treatment by this "politically intoxicated" commission. At this point, I don't know what coarse of action we will take, but, believe me, this is far from over.

Thanks for the ping, Tonk.

[Mayor]Autry said the commission went too far, saying Reyes' news release was "inflammatory, reckless, irresponsible and dangerous."

I would say that Mayor Autry is quite right. It seems to me that Ms. Reyes 'news release' was done in concert with the anarchist and leftist websites call to disrupt and harrass the FR rally and specified violence as one of their means. That constitutes conspiracy to assault and civil disorder by a government official/employee. The link may be further established if her admission to networking with people online to document FR threads includes people who posted on the other websites. There's a collusion to commit mayhem here.

Actually I beleive that activity is listed as acts of terrorism under the Patriot Act.

Arrest em and send them to Gitmo for a few years.

Bye Bye

If you are indeed 10,000 strong, show up at the next City Council meeting under the "Public Comment" portion of the agenda with a petition requesting retirement of the present Commissioners. Have folks come with written comments for submission. Choose a couple of really calm and articulate speakers to make your points concerning quashing Freedom of Speech and misusing the police powers of the state in a manner that injures the reputations of FRs.

Invite the Council to meet with leaders and become aquainted with the concept of FR and its roots in the traditions of grassroots political debate as observed by De Touqeville and exhibited in the Lincoln Douglas debates.

Above all, behave in an orderly and peacefull manner and follow protocols of the Council meeting on time limitations for speech, etc.

I don't think we have 10,000 in the Fresno area. We are getting good talk radio coverage today.

Ladyinred called in and then some members of HRC called and the final call was from a former mayor of Fresno. He called for the disbanding of the commission or the removal of current members with the City Council appointing new members to the HRC. He stated that the HRC has become a political tool of liberals.

I believe they should dissolve this commission and I really don't like the idea of personal information being given out.

I am not sure about Jerry Duncan. They did not say what he said.

A seminar to improve sensitivity to minority groups. Since when is FR a minority group. This is so lame.

I smell the Clintons. You know how they are about groups that don't exactly take to them or their ideas. Isn't it odd that whenever something is at stake, like the Presidency, in this case; the Clintons really turn up the smear burner? We should all know that by now. They will lie about anything and some poor souls will really believe their trash talk; but most, thankfully, will not.

Not bad, not bad. I like that. Or we could send them to Area 51 and let aliens perform autopsies on them. ;^)

Oops! Was that a threating post?

FR should not get itself into the category of money-hungry lawyers and their compliant clients. THEREFORE, if any suit is filed it should ask for "an apology, plus reasonable attorneys' fees," but no damages, unless the case is tried and the city loses at trial.

That way, we are reasonable as all git out, and the City attorneys would be well advised to get that apology out the door. In case the "Human Relations" people are dumb as a post and dug in solid, the case should make clear that an apology by the City on behalf of the HRC would be acceptable. (That would cause the City Council to back the HRC into a corner.)

They don't call me devious for nuttin.

Congressman Billybob

Latest column, "An Open Letter to Howard Dean," discussion thread on FR. Article will probably be on ChronWatch also.
