A magazine salesman from Ohio who was looking to "have some fun" in Utah County probably will return home after receiving a beating at the hands of an angry husband, Orem police said Tuesday.
Police responded to a call of two men fighting near 1100 S. 200 East about 3 p.m. Friday, said police Lt. Doug Edwards.
There they found the Ohio man, who "had obviously been involved in the fight, and looked to have come out on the losing end," he said.
Officers determined the salesman had been at a nearby home speaking with a woman who was not interested in buying magazines, he said. "When he realized he wasn't going to sell any magazines there, he told the young woman that he gets 500 bonus points for a hug," Edwards said.
The woman, who was caught off guard, gave him a "little hug." But the salesman turned his head and attempted to kiss her on the mouth. The woman pushed him away, slammed the door and called her husband, Edwards said.
The salesman freely admitted to police the incident had occurred, saying he likes to flirt and "have some fun" with women.
The woman's husband caught up with him as he was headed down the street "and was responsible for the condition the salesman was found in."
The salesman told police he probably deserved the beating, and declined to press charges against the woman's husband, Edwards said. "He thinks he'll go back to Ohio."

I have had experience with these salespeople, and they are obnoxious beyond belief. They are terribly friendly until you tell them no, then they get ugly. They always make a point to admire your house, and then act as if you owe it to them to buy their crap because you have a nice home. One actually accused me of contributing to the gang problem in Cleveland! They often claim to be college students too. Please, we have two of our own, and we're certainly not sending them nine states away to earn college money.

The salesman told police he probably deserved the beating, and declined to press charges against the woman's husband, Wow we really need more of this, especially when it comes to obnoxious cads and our women.
I love reading Louis L'Amour's books of the wild lawless Old West where no one would glance sideways at a woman for fear of being hung or worse. Wouldn't it be nice of we could revert back to those simpler times? (as the folks on the left always say)

I gotta get me a "No Solicitors" sign. Bet it doesn't stop them.
To: NEWwoman
How 'bout just telling them NO and then closing the door?

"The salesman told police he probably deserved the beating, and declined to press charges against the woman's husband,..."
This statement is surprisingly refreshing... To hear someone accept responsibility and take his beating like a man.

Last summer, one guy walked around the side of our house and stuck his head over our fence. We were sitting on the patio in privacy, we thought.

This statement is surprisingly refreshing... To hear someone accept responsibility and take his beating like a man. I agree that what the salesman did was wrong, and he deserved an ass whuppin', but what if the salesman had decided that he felt threatened and pulled a gun and shot the guy. He probably would have gotten off, claiming self defense. I understand how the husband felt, but chasing a guy down the
/devil's advocate

A dog works wonders on these types. Mine is a very friendly choc. lab, but her size intimidates strangers. They back off very quickly. Little do they know that if I let her loose on them, she would just lick them to death!

Let me explain at this point what the Salt Lake Trib couldn't/didn't.
The neighborhoods targeted by these magazine and cleaning supply people are fairly affluent, mostly white neighborhoods. The salespeople are all black. There is not a significant black population in Utah, and most of the targeted people would consider themselves to be decent, unprejudiced folks. So when a polite, friendly, well-groomed young (or not-so-young) black person knocks on their doors, they tend to smile back and at least listen to a minute of the sales pitch.
But when it comes time to say no thanks, it gets unpleasant, and the inference is that you are just another oppressive white jerk. I really resent that!

Wasn't it Peggy Noonan who wrote an article shortly after 9/11 applauding the return of Masculine Men?
Well, here it is!
Right or wrong, these guys did their thing, took their lumps and decided things the old fashioned way. Bare knuckles and a few choice words!
Man, I miss those days! Of course, I only miss em because I was mostly on the winning team! <|:-)~~

Little do they know that if I let her loose on them, she would just lick them to death! I have boxers. One is 85 lbs and the other is 55 lbs. Though they are the nicest dogs in the world, they hate strangers and anyone who knocks on the door. And boxers of that size, especially the 85 lb one are very intimidating in appearance.

What's effective is a gate on the driveway, 6 acres up hill to the house and two 80 pound intimidatingly friendly dogs. I don't depend on the half dozen or so no trespassing signs. Before the gate was put in place the signs might as well have been invisible to some people.
