The neighborhoods targeted by these magazine and cleaning supply people are fairly affluent, mostly white neighborhoods. The salespeople are all black. There is not a significant black population in Utah, and most of the targeted people would consider themselves to be decent, unprejudiced folks. So when a polite, friendly, well-groomed young (or not-so-young) black person knocks on their doors, they tend to smile back and at least listen to a minute of the sales pitch.
But when it comes time to say no thanks, it gets unpleasant, and the inference is that you are just another oppressive white jerk. I really resent that!
The suckers salespeople are then bussed to a perceived "affluent" area, dumped out and sent to peddle their wares to the unsuspecting locals.
Because the salespeople are "recruited" primarily from urban areas, the bulk of the salespeople are black. This isn't a black/white issue, it's simply a matter of an ongoing scam getting more attention.
I've had these sales-types show up at my door on more than one occasion, and I have turned them away each time. They've gotten a little abusive , language-wise with me, but the quiet raise of my eyebrow tends to squelch much of the dissent (one of the advantages to being a large man). My wife rarely answers the door; she leaves that task to me, since my size tends to intimidate undesirables appropriately.
Being in a brand new subdivision, I figure I'll start seeing them at my new home pretty soon.
