I have had experience with these salespeople, and they are obnoxious beyond belief. They are terribly friendly until you tell them no, then they get ugly. They always make a point to admire your house, and then act as if you owe it to them to buy their crap because you have a nice home. One actually accused me of contributing to the gang problem in Cleveland! They often claim to be college students too. Please, we have two of our own, and we're certainly not sending them nine states away to earn college money.

Wow we really need more of this, especially when it comes to obnoxious cads and our women.

I love reading Louis L'Amour's books of the wild lawless Old West where no one would glance sideways at a woman for fear of being hung or worse. Wouldn't it be nice of we could revert back to those simpler times? (as the folks on the left always say)

Let me explain at this point what the Salt Lake Trib couldn't/didn't.

The neighborhoods targeted by these magazine and cleaning supply people are fairly affluent, mostly white neighborhoods. The salespeople are all black. There is not a significant black population in Utah, and most of the targeted people would consider themselves to be decent, unprejudiced folks. So when a polite, friendly, well-groomed young (or not-so-young) black person knocks on their doors, they tend to smile back and at least listen to a minute of the sales pitch.

But when it comes time to say no thanks, it gets unpleasant, and the inference is that you are just another oppressive white jerk. I really resent that!

Right or wrong, these guys did their thing, took their lumps and decided things the old fashioned way. Bare knuckles and a few choice words!

I answer the door accompanied by a large cranky dog with very large teeth. Salesmen and other trash quickly find an urge to be elsewhere.

These "salesmen" (these ones have been kids arount 15-17 years old) have hit our place like the plague, every second day either one or two of them show up, my wife will not open the door to them she just talks to them through the front window. They keep giving us this tale about some trip to the bahamas and "this is the last day", or "I'm in #1 place and I just need a couple more subscriptions"...One of the jack-offs even tried to put his foot in my door jam over the threshold, I told him to move it or loose it...My wife's friend also had an armed intruder enter her house while she was home alone with her two babies a day after the same salesmen came to her place looking to sell magazines...

Our sheltie has a bark/howl that'll curdle your blood when someone's at the door. They're usually not anywhere close to the door when it's open if they're still there.

She also howls when Lassie barks on TV.

I respect the guy.

He pulled a stupid stunt, got called on it, took his beating, and refuses to press charges because he realizes he had the beating coming.

If only more Americans face the consequences of their actions in the same manor we'd have a lot less crap to deal with.
