Should Schwarzenegger quit?

Not really. Nor do we think Republicans Tom McClintock and Peter Ueberroth should get out of the race. At least not yet.

Well, maybe Mr. Ueberroth should. His blandness and lack of energy will not do.

The Democrats already have their Gray candidate. What's more, Mr. Ueberroth doesn't seem to be much more specific than Arnold Schwarzenegger, the frontrunner among Republicans currently in the race. But, then again, Mr. Ueberroth's nonpartisan pitch overrides his token Republicanism. For example, he's the only Republican in the race to oppose Proposition 187, the 1994 initiative barring state benefits to illegal aliens. Does this country-club Republican think he'll get Latino voters away from Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante? Indeed, in this crazy election, Mr. Ueberroth could end up with more Democrats and independent voters than Republicans.

On the contrary, a vote for McClintock is a vote for Bustamente.

Fortunately, nobody made you queen and we get to vote our own choices.

I see it like this: I have 2 choices, Bustamante or McClintock. Period.

My reasoningis as follows. California is suffering from a serious nasty disease, perhaps terminal.
McClintock might be able to save it, with a combination of fiscal restraint and thoughtful taxation. The deficit fairy does not exist.

Bustamante is so inept and clueless, he will make Davis look competent. Result? A nice quick and hopefully painless fiscal death and we can start over again.

Everyone else, including Arnold? prolonging the inevitable for months or perhaps years. I do not subscribe to lingering deaths for any reason.

Fortunately, although half of california may be functionally morons, I feel I can ride out whatever happens far better than all of them and as well as most of the remainder. The Schadenfreude (sp?) is simply an added bonus.

You, Registered, obviously do not appreciate the satisfaction that comes from crashing and burning for the umpteenth time, but with one's ideological purity completely intact. Kool aid, anyone?

"In one moment, we hear Arnold supporters denigrating McClintock as 'Mister Four Percent' and in the next breath they're claiming McClintock's supporters are so numerous that they can throw the election to Bustamante. So which is it? "

Gee I don't know... just who would Tom's ex-supporters vote for if Tom quit ?
Bustamante as a screw-you vote against the rest of the Reps who did not support Tom ?

All you have to do is add Arnold's and Tom's numbers together and if it comes up more then Cruz' you got it.

If it dosen't, then it dosen't matter - We lose.

Hopefully for Tom, if Cruz wins it would be by a margin that even Arnolds and Tom's together couldn't beat - then he dosen't go down in the books as the spoiler who lost the election for the Republican party.

Farmers used to have a cure for sheep-killing dogs. They'd chain the carcass to the dog until it finally rotted away. Voting for rinos is a way to avoid painful, but necessary consequences. It's akin to encouraging the dog to just kill progressively smaller animals hoping he will eventually lose his taste for blood. Never happen. We already have a party which places winning elections ahead of principle--they're called Democrats. Integrity is everything.

I thought that naturalization carried with it a renunciation of prior citizenship(s).

Yes, when one takes the oath of citizenship, he promises to relinquish his allegiance to other countries. Other countries may still claim the person as a citizen. To hold a US passport, you agree that you won't have a passport from another country.

To have dual citizenship, usually one must be born in one country to parents visiting from another country. For instance, if Arnold's parents were US citizens visiting Austria when he was born (they weren't), or if his Austrian parents were visiting the US when he was born, he could be a dual citizen. Dual citizens are supposed to pick one country when they turn 18, but we don't really enforce that. In fact, we don't bother to stop people from voting in both our elections and foreign elections (like in Mexico), which would have required citizenship in both countries.

Unless someone comes up with more proof that Schwarzenegger claims dual citizenship, it's appears not to be true.

There are more FReepers supporting McClintock according to the latest numbers.

Who do you support for Governor of California now that Bill Simon has dropped out? McClintock - 48% Schwarzenegger - 45% Other - 2% Undecided - 3%

In almost all of the polls listed below the total % for McClintock added to the column of the person in 2nd place, produces a win.

In all but one of the polls you listed where McClintock plus 2nd place would win, Ueberroth plus 2nd place would also win. It appears that Ueberroth is nearly as significant a spoiler as McClintock, if the given polls were actual election results.

(The one exception is the PPIC poll, where McClintock and Ueberroth are only 1% apart anyway.)

Sorry, I don't agree. Integrity is very important, yet I am so cynical that I don't believe most people have any idea of the concept. Not letting bustamecha win this election is presently, 'my everything'. Also, I believe you use the word integrity to foist your moral set, while I use the word to mean non-corruptible and honest. It is my opinion that AS is very honest and soundly incorruptible, complete in his being, an acknowledged free spirit. Yay, Arnie!

Ueberroth takes much more away from Ahnold than McClintock does since Ueberroth is basically campaigning as a "country club" Republican type.

And they're not unprincipled and arrogant fifth columnists who support him simply because he's ahead in the polls.

You are one confused fellow. They (Ueberoth supporters) are not unprincipled and arrogant fifth columnists who support him (Ueberoth) simply because he is [behind] in the polls.

Unlike McC supporters, continually throwing dirt, trying to embarrass, discredit and demoralize those who support AS, those like you who are like unprincipled and arrogant fifth columnists in their attack of AS.

Arnold hired Marty Wilson who was one of Quackenbush's top staffers in the middle of that scandal.

Thanks, ElkGroveDan.

I completely missed this piece of news during all the Buffett/Prop13 outrage:

Veterans of scandal join team (Team Arnold)

...
One Quackenbush consultant hired by Schwarzenegger's gubernatorial campaign, Jeff Randle, co-wrote a memo outlining how Quackenbush could enhance his image with money from insurance firms that mishandled Northridge earthquake claims.

Another, Don Sipple, produced controversial TV ads featuring Quackenbush and paid for with insurance company money.

A third consultant, Marty Wilson, used money from insurers to do pol itical polling for Quackenbush designed to gauge his chances for higher office.

A fourth, Quackenbush political consultant Joe Shumate -- who a legislative report said played a "central role" in the plan -- is discussing a position with the Schwarzenegger campaign.
...

Arnold's skeletons may not be that dangerous, but it is quite possible they could run him out of the race.

Arnold hasn't had to weather the dirt storm the Dems can throw up yet. Maybe Maria has some influence there.

Quit slandering the conservatives on this board who REFUSE to give up principles to elect a Democrat-lite candidate!
Guess what? McClintock is my first choice. Think about car buying. I REFUSE to walk miles just because I cannot afford the the car I like most.

In fact the closest race we've had in recent years was McClintock and he only lost by a fraction of a percent

A loss by a hair is still a loss. I'm tired of losers. Goin' to see Ahnold in the big 'no today.

And if the electorate were just Freepers, McClintock would really have a good shot.

"Perusing McClintocks donor roll, one would see a bunch of Indian Tribes that are also backing Bustamante for some strange reason."

Damn. I hate when that happens.

The fact is a lot of donors give to BOTH sides. That way, regardless of who wins, they still have paid for their influence.

How does truth_seeker know this? He used to read detailed donation reports, from corporate PACS.
