Here me now and believe me later, my friends: all these conservative orgasms over Arnold Schwarzenegger are - like the "Gorbasms" liberals experienced over Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev - fake. I know that (R) next to Schwarzenegger's name excites the White House, but his own words prove he's not a conservative. I call this "The Hollywood Syndrome," and it happens every time some actor-type says anything even remotely conservative. I'm not trying to cold shower anybody here, but don't look to anyone in Hollywood to validate your political ideas.
The American Prowler's George Neumayr detailed Arnold's politics in his article "Here's Arnold!" Quote: "[H]e spoke in generalities and banalities about his plans for the state. To the extent that he said anything, he sounded not like a fiscal conservative but a moderate Democrat. He said that he wanted businesses to come back to California so that the state government could collect enough tax revenues to provide social programs. This is the sort of obtuse comment middle-of-the-road Democrats always make, forgetting that businesses are leaving the state because they are tired of paying high taxes for those big government social programs."
More: "He has told the press he is 'very liberal' about social programs, supports abortion and homosexual adoption, and advocates 'sensible gun controls.' His entree into politics last year was a proposition Democrats endorsed because it raised state spending for what amounted to state babysitting - before-school and after-school programs that cost the state up to $455 million a year. He has complained openly about the party's conservatism.... Talk magazine described him as 'impatient' with the religious right.... [H]e expressed disgust with the Republicans who impeached Clinton. 'That was another thing I will never forgive the Republican Party for,' he said. 'We spent one year wasting time because there was a human failure. I was ashamed to call myself a Republican during that period.'"
Does this sound like "the Next Reagan," as some people are calling Arnold? Hardly. This guy may be the next actor elected governor of California, but that's where the similarity between him and Ronaldus Magnus end.

Then California will stay destroyed, because those hard-line conservatives can't get elected. In California .. I'd say that is a pretty good bet

I thank God for Rush Limbaugh!!
He is one of the most brilliant commentators of all time and I look forward to hearing his take on the news, including CA politics.

You are indeed correct. Bustamente is going to win this thing because he's Mexican and he'll clean up on the hispanic vote. How do you read the impact of Garamendi on the Dems?
To: Poohbah
....why don't you two stop with this backyard BS and contribute to the thread? Better yet as your mom use to say, "TAKE IT OUTSIDE" (freepmail), and quit bothering the rest of us??????????

Your comment didn't come across as a condemning accusation. I was as, you say, just making conversation.

"...I really think California is headed for disaster no matter who gets elected."
I agree with you. Mexifornia will have to die before it can rise from the ashes. I also envision a more overt movement there to become even more aligned with Mexico (if that's possible), which will be de facto secession. Hell, it's 3/4 of the way to becoming a part of Mexico now.

But he is not better than any Republican and there are going to be viable conservatives running in this race.
This yo-yo is not our only choice, and I predict he's going to fold up like a cheap lawnchair.

Don't hold your breath. Find anyone - ANYONE - who fits the classic conservative box that Rush draws and there's NWIH he/she gets elected there.

Well I almost responded with "Nothin wrong with it. In fact, hubba hubba."
But I didn't want to be tasteless. :)
It's just part of the whole farcicial nature of this situation, to me.

Are you saying Good conservatives are bad?No, I'm saying that really pure conservatives can't win in this state. It's a fact of life. Take what you can get and work on incrementally moving the ball--but that's not good enough for folks who don't have to actually do things like win elections.
I've seen a lot more pickiness around FR than on Rush's show.
He's starting to play to that end of the audience now.

I think you are pretty right on this issue. CA. is a liberal state and a true conservative is probably not going to win. Arnold may be the best we can hope for. The people in the state may think its time for a change and a non politcian like Arnold may be the guy to pull it off. I think we are going to know pretty guickly whether he is a viable candidate. It is a good sign that his wife is taking a leave from her post at NBC. She can deter some of these hits that are going to come his way. If nothing else, it is going to be very interesting.

Washington is a bit unique in that it is, like California, the foundation of the new leftism -- environmentalism to the point of religiosity, feminism and gay rights -- but it is also deeply imbued with old-line leftism (radical trade unionism and even outright communism). In 1937 one of FDR's cabinet officers described the country as "47 states and the Soviet of Washington."
So we've never had a strong conservative tradition like California. Your friends could be from union backgrounds (most of us born in Washington were born to people who worked as union members, that's how all-encompassing union employment was in this state). The environmentalist movement really piggy-backed on the union tradition. The public schools here evangelise a radical environmentalism -- so as children you get 18 years of indoctrination on the taxpayers dime.
There are many ways that people otherwise conservative go radical green out here.
Republicans are essentially characterized as Nazis in the media -- people who want to stop you from dancing with your lovers down the highway naked -- and that has stuck too.
It's very hard to overcome. If we could simply push California, Oregon and Washington into the moderate, mildly left column, we'd be making huge gains -- gains that could help tilt national elections.
To: Maria S
afaik, it's real -- from his Mr. Universe days. The best body on the planet had to be judged, I guess.

Who ever said Arnold was like Reagan? Nobody. But it sounds good on the radio.
