July 29, 2003 -- The principals union said yesterday that a new high school for gay students "should be open to any student" - not just to those who are homosexual, bisexual or transgender.
The union staked out its position as Mayor Bloomberg hailed the first-in-the-nation Harvey Milk HS - disclosed in yesterday's Post - which will open this September with 100 students at 2 Astor Place in the East Village.

Exactly! The best way to get a Gay/Lesbian/Transgender/Bisexual/etc. school is to have school vouchers, not by establishing special privileges for a select few. This is another example of liberal 'ideals' biting each other when taken to their logical extremes.
Frankly, I don't care if there's a school for them and only them. But, by that token, why not have a school for nerdy computer geeks. Aren't they picked on as well? Overweight kids? Kids with bad haircuts? As a former overweight, glasses-wearing, computer geek, I'd have loved if a school had been specially built for me.
If we had a voucher system, instead of the kids getting special treatment (i.e. $$$$$$), then every child could be treated as specially as their parents thought necessary.
In New York City, the demand has created a three-year waiting list at the Harvey Milk School(now accredited that's why the present day story), said spokesman Carl Strange. Like the Dallas school, now in its fifth year, a private Dallas High School opens for LGBT teens only. The Harvey Milk School has received queries from educators nationwide and outside the United States who are interested in starting similar programs. - 09/2001 article http://www.glsen.org/templates/news/record.html?section=12&record=991
Harvey Milk is not new news, the reconstruction slant is, with specifics on financing not given (%). Every news talk show picked this up yesterday and actually made comments verbatum from your first run on this piece. Guess we can tell who reads FR by their news/talk. However, they were not so quick to dwell on the per student cost. The issue fell more under segregation.
Is it ok if one requests to be segregated? How is it also that a high school student is already transgender?

From you:
I wonder what their definition of gay is? Would students who think they are gay but have never had sexual relations with a member of their own sex yet be counted as gay, or would only students who have already had homosexal sex be counted. If actually having sex were the requirement, wouldn't it have to be confirmed?
Now how do you suppose these guidance counselors will know someone is 'gay'? Can you say recruitment in normal schools? I knew you could.
I can just see the molestors lining up for these counselor jobs now. I can also see the referral reports. "Josh is certified 'gay' and he is really tight to boot, I'd recommend him"
Any exposure of children to homosexual behavior is child abuse
White kids requested to be segrated for years and the courts said we couldn't be.
I'd be willing to pay money to send my kids to a segregated school.
I may check into it.
Now, at the beginning of a brand new century of enlightenment and vision, the State of New York in it's omnipotent politically-correct version of a Brave New World, at the initial expense of 3.2 million dollars in taxpayer funded monies, levied on blacks and whites, gays and straights, civil rights activists and gloating bigots has rolled back the clock to the 1950's! They have in-effect built either the State's largest gay dating service for teens under the guise of a safe-house from the evil disapproving Christians, Muslims and Jews whose taxes will likewise pay for this lunatic anti-social experiment or they have condemned the gay community to exile and further sideshow exhibition of their differences, robbing them of any chance to ever integrate smoothly into society without a deal-with-my-gayness-or-else chip on their shoulder. I say "initial expense" because the law-suits haven't started yet.
Had this scheme not had the endorsement of and been the brainchild concieved by some feel-good, touchy-feely, gay-rights division of G.L.A.D.D. or ACT-UP to somehow "protect the gay, bisexual and transgendered, identity-challenged, special-needs community" it could have as easily been the idea of some Nazi hate-group to keep the "fags and freaks in their own pen of AIDS-infested iniquity to wallow in their debauchery safely behind prison walls keeping their bodily fluids and crackpot ideals out-of-sight/out-of-mind from all decent folk". Oh yes my friends, the lawyers who cooked up this dish have dollar signs in their greedy eyes - they smell the litigation as surely as the politicos who let this gem slip by will soon be playing the finger-pointing blame-game in front of every television news camera they can push their way in front of.
Take your pick - whether this is a tolerance-enhanced, hetero-free zone of elitist clique or a concentration camp for misfits, deviants and degenerates, it's the end-result of FUBAR politics at its worst and has nothing at all to do with "The Children". If it was ever about "the Children" I'd have never gotten my ass kicked on those 40-minute bus rides to East Over-Yonder High because the school bullies couldn't help but stomp the crap out of the goofy looking kid with myopic corrective devices that made Stephen King's Coke-bottle lenses look like sleek fashion statements.
