Johnny Depp, Pirate of St. Tropez

USA Weekend.com ran a July 6, 2003, story on the “always offbeat” star of the new Disney movie, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Basically, the story on Depp is a condemnation of America, its people and its place in the world. Johnny “loves” America, but prefers France. He moved there five years ago and has never looked back. You see France is far more civilized than America for Johnny as he is “shocked by the gun violence in American schools and feels it is far safer raising a family in France.”

What does that have to do with trying to keep your kids from violent harm?

I doubt they will be taught to hate America, and what's wrong with someone being a Moslem?

He's sticking his head in the sand. Doesn't necessarily mean that his kids are any safer. How much are they at risk in America since they are 4 and under? Are they out of his guardianship that much that he should be scared?

Is France that much safer?

I know that the cartoonist Robert Crumb moved to France (someone traded him a home for his sketchbooks). He wanted to get his daughter out of California and their schools. He also wanted to get away from crass commercialism.

Since he moved to France, he's become aware of some of France's drawbacks. He's also come to realize that he won't be entirely happy any place. His record collection (among other things) make another move very unlikely.

You have to remember that Depp's idea of being a responsible parent is to buy his kids GOOD marijuana instead of the dangerous, impure stuff found on the streets. yup, that's what he said in an article quoted the other day. So, if that's his weird idea of responsible parenting, why should his weird ideas about France being oh-so-sophisticated be a surprise? Just another Hollyweird actor as far as I'm concerned.

Just remember that all these actors are paid to mouth other people's words, scripts--they do not have original ideas. they are not paid to think; they are paid to read lines. The script he's reading from right now is the one that says Europe is sophisticated and US is primitive.

Disney has some kind of deal to either produce or distribute Pixar films, but I think the deal expired with Nemo or with their next film.

True. I winced through Baldwin's "work" in Pearl Harbor.

I don't know if they are any safer or not, but it is his decision, and it doesn't seem too fair to denigrate him for doing what he thinks is best.

Unless your a Jew in a French school. Depp seems to have overlooked the rampant anti-semetism.

No I didn't see Depp on Letterman. Actors are ALL strange. My daughter pursued acting for a while but I am happy to say she decided to work behind the curtain, instead of in front of it. lol

Great post. The unnecessary excerpting is ruining this forum.
