Kerry criticizes Bush record at La Raza

AUSTIN — On President Bush's home turf, Democratic hopeful John Kerry on Sunday lambasted the president's record on the issues of health care, education and immigration, while making a powerful pitch for the sought-after Hispanic vote.

"Last election, he promised so much to win your votes," Kerry said. "But President Bush won't be running on his rhetoric this time, he'll be running on his record."

Kerry, one of the early front-runners for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination, was a guest speaker at the annual conference of the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy group. Howard Dean, another candidate, was scheduled to address the group on Monday. The presence of two Democratic contenders at the Texas convention could show how influential the Hispanic vote will be in the election.

"This president is accountable for making a mockery of the words 'leave no child behind,' " Kerry said, noting that one in four Hispanic children in the United States. are without health insurance. Kerry said that, if elected, he would fight to ensure health coverage for every child.

Raul Yzaguirre, president of NCLR, also criticized Bush's record as president, calling his administration "two and a half years of neglect, disinterest and disrespect."

"The truth is, that for the issues that matter to us, this administration has been a major disappointment for the Latino community," Yzaguirre said.

The number of registered Latino voters increased 20 percent from 1996 to 2000. Hispanic voters are expected to increase by two million in 2004, according to the council. The conference was expected to draw about 20,000 to Austin.

AUSTIN — On President Bush's home turf,

Austin is not President Bush's home turf.

Has there ever been a president who kept more of his campaign promises that George Bush?

Okay...let's see if I have this right. GWB has pandered so horribly and so pathetically to the Hispanic population and those who think the borders should be a place where people entering the country illegally should be greeted with a good meal, free health care, and an ID card that a huge percentage of his core, conservative Repulican constituency won't vote for him. Well, look at this...whatever he gives them or promises them, they know even more outrageous promises will follow from panderers on the other side.

Doesn't ANYBODY (except Tancredo) want the huge percentage of votes that want protected US borders and people here illegally sent home?

He lived in Austin as governor for 6 years prior to the white house. I'd say it is his turf.

Geographically Austin is in Texas, but it's overrun with liberals -- the antithesis of the majority of Texas. That's why it's the Dems favorite venue when they come to Texas with their partisan agendas. Texas Governors live there because it's the seat of state government and Bush hot tailed it out of there when it came time to buy a home. Besides, his roots are in West Texas and Houston.

Let me get this straight. NCLR means "National Council of The Race" and Kerry is trying to out pander GWB by kissing their behinds even more.

Raul complaining about being disrespected, well you reap what sow.

The Democrats make a mockery of the immigration laws. What matters to them is their vote.

Better yet, tell them to practice a little birth control until they can afford even one kid.

My wife and I would have liked to have more kids but we were brought up to take of myself and family and didn't expect government hand-outs. Now, as a taxpayer, I'm expected to pay for someone elses kids. NO. I will not go along with this.

La Raza is in the forefront of advocating the return of most of the Texas Republic back to Mexico. A real place for an individual seeking the Presidency to campaign.

La Raza -"The Race" is the hispanic version of the KKK. The only difference being that La Raza racists are also communists.

Shortly after taking office in 1985, Kerry and Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa went on a fact-finding trip to Nicaragua, where they met with Daniel Ortega (right) and other Sandinistas. The trip was criticized when the Sandinistas cemented ties with Moscow.
