Something truly outstanding! The very graphic trailer to Mel Gibson's THE PASSION!
Hey folks, Harry here... Once every now and again a really special project comes along borne out of a passion for the material. We've seen Peter Jackson's passion really come through with his LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy thus far, and well... I've got a feeling that Mel Gibson has that same sort of drive in the making of THE PASSION. While I'm not a deeply religious person, I can not help, but acknowledge the ingrained power to the story of Christ's final hours. Simply, as one film called it, it's the greatest story ever told, or at least one of them.
The story of Christ in those final hours is one of pain and torment and astonishing spirit. From the images in this trailer that was sent to me, I can't help but believe in Mel's vision for the film. Shot in the original language of the time and allegedly being shone sans subtitles, I really feel this is not only powerful filmmaking, but a bold artistic step forward for Mel. I also feel that it has the chance to really become a bit of a phenomenon in theaters that play it, and can't believe it hasn't been picked up by a studio yet. I mean, the story behind the making of this film in its original "dead" languages and the opportunity to have Mel Gibson on every talk show in the world talking about the decisions and reasons he had for making the film this way... Well, I think it has a wider audience than anyone is currently expecting. Here's the trailer that was sent to me... See what you think, though 10 to 1, it will crash my server, so be quick!

Thanks for posting this. Let this be another end times witness to the world. God bless Mel. A lot of us Freepers have major theological agreements, but not on the incomprehensible grace God showed to hell-deserving sinners like us in allowing his eternal Son to suffer and die such an agonizing death to pay for our sins. And it was our sins, as well as the players in that first century A.D. drama that put him there. And He is coming again. He came the first time as a suffering sacrifice. He's coming again as a conquering king. He came the first time to save. He's coming the second time to judge. At the first time the serpent bruised his heel, but when He returns the crushing of the serpent's head that began on the cross will be completed. When He returns, ALL will confess that He is Lord, for some He will only be their Judge. For believers, He will be their Savior. The first time He saved us from the power and penalty of sin. The second time, He will save us from the very presence of sin. He is coming. No act of Congress, no resolution from the U.N., no decision of the Supreme Court and no mortal army nor the Devil himself and all of the demons of hell can stop this event from taking place. Ahem. Excuse me for preaching a little.
Psalm 2: "1 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying, 3 "Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us." 4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The LORD shall hold them in derision. 5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure: 6 "Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion." 7 "I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter's vessel.'" 10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him."

Wow. I think this film is going to be huge all around the world. If he subtitles it. But far less people then he thinks are going to go to a movie in Aramaic.

I don't understand what is gained by putting it in Aramaic and Latin. Actors can remember phonetic pronunciation but it doesn't compare to inflecting syllables and breaking words in two and other techniques that come naturally when you're acting in your own language.
It's one thing to do it for a couple minutes in LotR, another to fill a movie with it. I know, I know, the images will be more important than the words, but reading subtitles can be distracting too.
And please, the nails go through the WRISTS!! Man, that bothers me.

I don't really need subtitles, either. After a lifetime in Catholic church praying during the Way of the Cross, I know the words in my heart.
But since Gibson hopes to attract a wider audience, he's the director, let him decide.
Maybe someday we can watch the director's cut on DVD.
Looking forward to seeing this movie very much, subtitles or no.

Whatever. Personally I would like to see it without subtitles. We'll see. I will see it without subititles also, but remember, hopefully the point of the movie is not just to please those of us who already love the Lord. Hopefully, 100 million non-Christians around the world will see the movie and learn to love Christ. It is those people who are most important, and it is for them that their ought to be subtitles as they don't know and understand what really happened.

I couldn't get it to download. It tried to open in Quick Time but never did. I have high-speed cable.

I have high speed also and it took about 5 minutes to open.
It was worth it.

Amazing. Worth the wait. With these incredibly strong visuals, I'm beginning to think that Gibson's decision to shoot the movie in latin and aramaic dialogue only is a stroke of genius. Subtitling in english would only likely detract from the power of the visual narrative.
To: Brian Mosely
I've got one minor gripe with this film already -- based even just on what I've seen in this trailer.
On a physiological level, the film looks to be factually incorrect. It shows the soldiers driving a nail into the palm of Jesus' hand. In contrast, the image on the Shroud of Turin shows nail wounds in the wrists, not in the palms of the hand. Scientists who have examined the Shroud have used this seemingly minor detail as evidence of the Shroud's authenticity -- in order to support the weight of an adult human body, a nail must be driven through the wrist between the radius and ulna bones, mot through the palm.
To: Alberta's Child
You are exactly right. There is a scholarly article on crucifixion in Roman times. Not only did they put the spike between the two bones in the wrist, but they also used a flat piece of wood as a "washer" to further ensure that the victim did not fall off.
This caused me to wonder about, then, Thomas' insistence on seeing the "palms" of Jesus' hands, but an expert on that era at Miami University, Ed Yamauchi, informed me that the Greek word for "wrists" and "palms" was the same. So Thomas said he wouldn't believe until he put his fingers in the holes in the wrists.
