MIAMI, July 7 (UPI) -- An 8-year-old Miami-area boy faces felony charges after causing massive injuries to a 4-month-old kitten because, he told officials, he was bored.

The Miami Herald said the kitten suffered a fractured skull, fractured palate and head trauma when the unidentified boy swung it by its tail and slammed it to the ground near his Lauderdale Lakes home.

Tell me about that book by Dr. Peck. How much religion is in it? And how is it weaved into the psychiatric anecdotes and analyses? I guess what I'm asking is does he start quoting scripture and talking about Christ's love, or does he weave in themes that are nearly universal in human religion because they attempt to deal with questions of evil?

If it's the latter I'm very interested.

Piper has hit the sack, but my experience with Peck (in a different book) is that he speaks of general theological concepts of good and evil, heaven and (very very importantly) hell. Peck regards hell as not just a figurative thing, nor even primarily as a place where bad people go when they die, but as a source of considerable trouble to the here and now. It's not just nicey nicey Jesus loves you. It's "resist the devil and he will flee from you." I really respect Peck for this because it wasn't preached into him; he discovered it while practicing secular psychology; THEN he became a Christian.

The salient point is that he derived pleasure from torturing the cat. It doesn't matter if he knew if it was right or wrong, the fact is he got off on the pain the animal suffered.

This is a budding psychopath. I hope something can be done for him but unless they can get him out of his present environment, it's highly doubtful that anything will change him.

What happens when hurting animals no longer provides any satisfaction?

It is the latter -g-
I would not have survived a very harrowing time in my life, if not for my faith and this book.

Got to the sample pages Skywalk:

I remember hearing older boys *talk* about torturing cats & then throwing them over the house. I never saw this & do not know for sure if they really did it but I remember being frightned of them too.

I have yet to read The Road Less Traveled and Beyond, have you? I think Skywalk would be very interested in Theosophy.
I took courses in it back in 77' and have applied it to my everyday life. That and the Angels of course ;)

Yes thank you for reminding me. The Road Less Traveled. Theosophy scares me, as does an over-emphasis on angels (God comes first, and angels are his ministers to those who will inherit salvation). I take my New Testament straight. Peck is usually (not always) compatible with this. If I can't reconcile the two, the Bible wins.

By the way I want to clarify (in the most agreeable way possible given what I believe :-). Ultimately I believe Christianity, and the Bible, is right. But it appears that God the Holy Spirit actually led Peck through this journey from being a nonbeliever, through theological concepts, into the objective truths of Christianity. That's infinitely more persuasive, to me, than going along with some human preacher in a rote just because you always went to that church all your life but never had a personal relationship with God. What good is God to a person if he can never have a personal relationship with him? Peck seems to have walked with God and lived the truths of the bible. Which, yes, includes John 3:16. Shameless sales pitch over and out.

I very much appreciate your replies to me. I shall look further into this subject matter.

Crimelibrary is great and informative and the writers do not fear to pass judgment.

"Mentally ill" is a convenient term. Our government today uses that term to describe a multitude of conditions, which allow people to go through life not really taking responsibilty for their lives.
Have you ever seen a psychaitric facility, or been "interviewed" by a psychiatrist? Have you looked at how they classify, and group, alleged illnesses? Are you familiar with their handbook for diagnosis?
Psychiatry is NOT A SCIENCE. It is probably only one level above podiatrists and chiropractics. It may even be one or two levels below them, in its exactitiude. It is very subjective. Of course a psychiatrist would deny these statements as BS.
I have lyme disease. I was placed into a psychiactric ward, when found wandering incoherently in the woods.
My body temp was 93.9, pulse 35-40, and low BP.
It was Christmas, 1994. (taken to hosp on Dec 21.).
Due to the holiday, it was several days before I was actually seen by a psychiatrist. By the time I saw her, I was stabilized and rational.
She talked with me for about 15 minutes, and decided that I had had a bad reaction to Cocaine.
I have never taken cocaine.
She described some psychotropic drugs for me to take for my alleged problem. V-something Acid that I took one dose of, AND WAS SURE I WAS GOING OUT OF MY MIND! I refused to take more, and was told that I was a bad boy.
When i was young, I experimented with Pot, and even with LSD. Those drugs are like comparing a 12 oz. coke with a pint of tequila.
It took a nurse's initiative to have me sent to the med ward to see a real doc. He took blood, treated me for 28 days with some tough antibiotics, and they sent me home.
I WAS NEVER TREATED FOR A PSYCHIATRIC CONDITIONn but they tried.
I did get to spend a little time around those folks interned there. Before you condemn someone to a fate with idiots, know the idiots. The docs have a good thing going, and from those I met while inside, they were mostly just people hiding from the world! The docs were revealed to be the idiots.

You should probably be prosecuted for your misdeeds, too. I repeat, I do not condone what this child did, just question the attitiude of his accusers .

When i was a kid, birds and animals were always a target. Kids had BB guns, bottle rockets, and I even knew some guys that put firecrackers up a frogs butt, so they could see him explode.
Pretty gross, huh? But did they grow up to dismember and eat, kill and ravage? No. One of them is now a judge.
They were boys. Now they are giving these little guys GOOD drugs so they can CONTROL THEIR BEHAVIOR.

THEY DON'T LIKE THE WAY BOYS ACT! So, when they don't like the behavior, it must be bad. Put a name on the condition, and then give them some drugs. That is your answer.
NOT MINE!
We all exhibit some form of behavior which could be considered "anti-social". Some of us do a better job of hiding it! But the psychiatrists are just taking (somewhat) educated guesses in their treatment of their patients SUPPOSED maladies. They use a dart and target method, and if that doesn't work, then they just "plan b", "plan c", ad nauseum!
Our mainstream society is constantly resorting to drugs for their answers. Yet, they fight against the people's choices of self-medications in their WOD.
Recently, the Supreme Court gave the homosexual community a boost. They say it alright to have perverted sex. IT IS THEIR RIGHT NOW!
I feel it is a perversion, and do not want to be in the social circles these people are in. God gave us sex to procreate, not just satisfy our lusts. A measure of self-control is required. Not mine, theirs!
I am not a homo-phobe. I am against homosexual behavior, and those that practice it.
To me, their actions are much worse than anything this boy did!
The Supreme Court says it is alright to "terminate" a pregnancy. Abortion is OK, evn preferred by many, to having the burden of a child, unwanted!
I know enough folks ready to adopt, but there are too many selfish people who don't want to keep a child until the end of gestation. Many abortions are little more than cosmetic procedures, because some young lady got preggers, and it is going to "ruin her figure"! They want to play, but not to pay!

God is the only answer to the ills within our society. The Blood of Jesus is the ONLY CURE!

I grew up with a kid who was constantly torturing cats and kittens, setting them on fire, hanging them off telephone poles by a jack knife through the tail, blowing them up with cherry bombs, etc. We smaller, younger kids were petrified of him. He had a long and honorable career in the local fire department and is now retired. My skin still crawls just thinking about him...

When I was in High School in Ohio, I was the photography dark room partner with a guy who would kill animals, skin them, bleach their bones, and photograph their skulls on sticks in his backyard.

He was eventually murdered in a prison bathroom while he was serving several life sentences for murdering and eating 17 young gay men.

Take a breath... and re-read the thread... I mention that I believe this child needs forgiveness and salvation from God. My biggest concern is the amount of suffering that he is experiencing, not just mentally, but within his soul.

Thanks...

I think that kid needs psychiatric help--exhibits signs of a future sociopath.

Seems this kid is more well adjusted and had a proper upbringing.

With as much work as God has the Angels do his bidding just fine -g-

Don't be 'scared' of Theosophy. It combines the best of 'all' religions' and philosophers. Madame Blavatsky was a simply amazing woman. On her query why men are so different than women, she disguised herself and travelled on a ship for 12 years, yes she was a very homely woman LOL.

I like it because Theosophy does not put a monetary blackmail on praying, going to church to pay to pray. I grew up Catholic, tried many religions and the manmade dogma is what scared me -g-

Another psych horror story:

My sister-in-law was on hormone replacement therapy for 30 years. Her idiot MD decided to stop them, for God knows what reason. He stopped them abruptly as opposed to weaning her.

She went into a total breakdown. They put her in psych. I cried and warned my brother and their daughter NO, this is not the place for her. They gave her shock treament and she has lost much of her memory. Psych hospitals first look at who your insurance carrier is and then decide you need to be committed.
