Mexico is committed to reducing migrant deaths and improving security on the border, but the flow of illegal immigrants will continue so long as there is no organized and legal way to seek temporary work in the United States, Mexico's deputy foreign minister said Saturday.
Geronimo Gutierrez toured the border Friday and Saturday on behalf of Mexico's President Vicente Fox.
"Having mechanisms for migration that are legal, secure and orderly creates the security that is so much a concern to the United States," Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez also issued a warning to "coyotes," people smugglers, who, he said, bear the greatest blame for the border's annual harvest of death.
"It is high priority of President Fox to put an end to these bands of people traffickers who lie to the migrants, lead them into the desert, then abandon them," he said. "They will be pursued; they will be prosecuted."
Gutierrez spoke at a press conference here after a two-day tour of the Arizona-Sonora border. He said border consulates will redouble their campaign to warn migrants of the dangers they face.
But he repeated his government's position that it can do nothing to stop its citizens from traveling freely.
About 350 Mexican immigrants die every year trying to cross the border.
According to the U.S. Border Patrol, at least 145 people died trying to enter the United States through Arizona last year, although an Arizona Daily Star analysis of law enforcement, medical examiner, and Mexican Consulate records found more than 160 deaths.
As far as I can see, Mexicans are FREE to travel to the border of Mexico with America.
Once they cross that border, they are NOT "traveling freely."
It seems the jobs are moving to Mexico and they want the American jobs remaining in the USA.
What good is it being in the upper class if there is such a big middle class that people are not willing to do whatever you say just to survive. Mexico has a wealthy class who are very very rich and a whole lot of poverty. By maintaining a totally corrupt government those who are in the super rich class are not really subject to the laws like the campesinos. This is very good if one is in the super rich class. Unfortunately the USA is moving towards the same economic structure with similar corruption.
What does this person consider temporary? Do any of them ever go back other than vacations?
".........illegal immigrants will continue so long as there ................." is not a large enough supply of domestic Chicken Pluckers. With so many lay-offs and permanent discharges from the manufacturing sector, we should encourage these newly unemployed Americans to make a career change. They should head to their nearest Chicken Plucking Academy and enroll so they can become productive again in the "new economy" and not allow these lucrative jobs go to illegals ;-)
Welcome to Feudal 14th Century Mexico. I believe Mexico has 4 of the 12 or 13 Latin American billionaires. Most of them come from the same group of families. They could devolve some of their wealth to the "little people" (actually, they refer to them as "cockroaches", but hey, this is a clean forum, right?), but their contempt for their countrymen runs so deep that they would never consider it.
Since the gringos have shown themselves to be "weak" by employing Los Campesinos, and providing them with welfare and free schooling, the Mexican Caudillos are thrilled to exploit this weakness. And exploiting weaklings is what they have excelled at doing for 500 years.
What's really hilarious to watch is the current administration bending over for this crap. One sure way to encourage the Spaniard thugs of Mexico: roll over for them. Mr. Bush recently decided that he needed to go 9000 miles away to show he means business. He could also put up a fight on the U.S. border, and that would be the slap in the face that would tell these Conquistadore terrorists that the game was over, and the U.S. wasn't playing anymore.
They aren't our "friends", they aren't culturally "related" to us, and they don't believe in the same things AT ALL, and people who believe that are deluded, and open to cynical exploitation by these a**holes.
A stone freaking lie! You set up a guest worker program and it's laws will be violated to the max with Mexicans bringing over family and staying forever. There is no thing as permanent as a temporary worker. Just look at the Turks in Germany when they've long outlived their usefulness as guest workers.
Guest workers are not machines but are people who will do what they'll want to do in the USA since we are so loathe to enforce laws when it comes to illegal alien Mexicans and deport them. These arrogant, pushy jack assses who run Mexico will get nothing when the economy is so poor.
I have a problem with their sense of entitlement to American jobs. We should do a "Panama" on Mexico and clean out their government.
