XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX SUN FEB 23, 2003 23:59:11 ET XXXXX CROW CHARGES: GRAMMY COMMITTEE WARNED ME In New York City on Sunday night, Sheryl Crow claimed GRAMMY reps called her management telling her to refrain from making anti-war statements during the live awards show! "I was [going to do something] and then the GRAMMY committee called up my manager... they said they wanted to keep it all neutral," Crow bravely revealed backstage. MORE GRAMMY officials quicky moved in to action -- "categorically" denying Crow's charge. "No one contacted any artist to talk about content," GRAMMY President Neil Portnow said sternly. On Friday the DRUDGE REPORT disclosed that a CBS executive warned microphones could be unplugged if live performances turned political. "It, of course, is a final option [to cut the microphone.] But it's a very real option," said the top source, who demanded anonymity. "There is a time for political commentary, this is not one of them!" On Saturday CBS's official spokesman Chris Ender publicly denied the DRUDGE story: "There will be no restrictions on artistic expression or opinions expressed during acceptance speeches." Crow, whose guitar strap featured the words "NO WAR" during her on-air Sunday night performance, stopped short of her AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS turn when she wore a 'War is Not the Answer' sequined t-shirt and told reporters, 'I think war is based in greed and there are huge karmic retributions that will follow. I think war is never the answer to solving any problems. The best way to solve problems is to not have enemies." Developing...

The Grammies claim they didn't censor anyone. If they had any real conviction, the loonies would had spouted off what they think, but they don't have convictions, they're just being "hip" (Garafolo).

And, spouting in front of main-stream America would have probably stunted or killed some careers

Avril inside coat said "Rock On"

Dead Prez is a musical act (Dead Presidents is slang for paper money).

Notice how FReepers are outraged when MTV censors anti-Hilary boos, but when the Grammys censor anti-Bush statements, that's just fine.

Neither incident is "censorship", and furthermore you're comparing apples and oranges.

Crow could still have tried it. But she didn't. Gutless wonder.

Equating the two is a bit of a stretch. MTV misrepresented an event by producing a DVD of the live event, but editing out the boos to make it appear that hillary was cheered by the firemen/policemen at the event -- a fraudulent misrepresentation of the reality of the event.

Here, the ORGANIZERS of an event, i.e. the property owners, tell the guests to behave themselves appropriately and refrain from using the event as a soapbox for their political agenda. As the owner of the event, the Grammy committee has a reasonable right to make such a demand on the people who will appear there. If these idiots want to pontificate on their political agenda, let them buy the airtime somewhere else rather than squatting on someone else's property.

It had "no war" written on it.

But since the show had a several second delay, they cut to a camera in back of the band, so when she opened her big coat, it just looked like she was flashing the audience for a few seconds.

She tossed off the jacket once the song got going, and the message (distored in the folds) was visible for just a flash.

I forgive her. She's eighteen, she's supposed to be stupid.

Crow could still have tried it.

Or, she could have done like Charlie Daniels Band and told them, "If you don't want me to say what I have to say, that's fine; I just won't show up at your little party." CDB demonstrated class and guts by standing up to organizers and foregoing the performance to perform somewhere else where their message was welcome. Crow, on the other hand, is a brainless, classless, and gutless little twit.

The best way to solve problems is not to have enemies.

In theory, that would be correct.

So to apply that logic then when I would not be able to have a favorite football team, because they all would be my favorite. On each game I would have to root for a tie and I couldn't watch the Superbowl because my favorite team would definitely lose.

I wouldn't watch any awards shows because every artist would have to be my favorite and I would feel bad for all the one's that lost. In addition I would be uncomfortable with recognizing only one for his/her accomplishments.

I could do political protest because I agree with every position. Even when they contradict.

Oh, and by the way. Nobody is allow to hate me because I have no enemies.

Thank you Ms. Crow for showing us that it requires more that a 8th grade mentality to understand the REAL WORLD.

I guess her political views aren't that important to her if she's not willing to break the "rules" to get her point across. Hell, even Martin Sheen lets himself get arrested when he stands up for his views (misguided and wrong as they are).

First, It was VH1, not MTV that put out a video with the soundtrack altered to eliminate the boos when Hillary! appeared on stage.

Second, there is a huge difference between deliberatly changing the historical record of an event to distort the crowd response (how would it seem if you were to take a video of MLK's "I have a dream speech" and change the crowd response to boos) and telling a performer to stick to what they are there for, entertaining, not "educating". After all Ed Sullivan told the Rolling Stones to change "Let's spend the night together" to "Let's spend some time together" and they agreed, then did it the right way anyway. If Sheryl wanted to make a statement she could have, it's her career to destroy.

She didn't even have to break the rules. All she had to do was flip the left side of her hair back so people could see her guitar strap, but she didn't want to ruin all that time she & her stylists and colorists spent on her hair.

She's vacuous and shallow.

EGGS-actly!

The image: Hi there, I'm a celebrity bravely taking a stance against the 'establishment'.

The reality: Hi there, I'll do what I told, lest I get bleeped.

Geez Crow, where's the 'courage of your convictions' so to speak? What difference does it make if CBS cuts to a commercial? Doesn't that make the act of defiance all the more impressive? Or, did Crow turn Chicken?

Not that I wanted a night full of protests, but I mean, really, if you're going to do something, DO IT!

I think war is never the answer to solving any problems.

Seems to me slavery and nazism were solved by war. These people are so stOOpid!
