***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

Yeah. My dad had a place up there, and it was great in the summer. WINTERS, on the other hand, were hard-core.

He's in Walker Lake. I'm glad he's here. I got him a snow blower a couple of years ago but this is going to be doozy up there I'm sure.

I work in a local grocery store and they just called and told me to report at 7am tomorrow....I laughed at them.

You need to have a chat with my crazy husband. We live in North Central NJ (about 30 mi west of Manhattan) and just starting to see some flakes now. Should be blizzard conditions by tomorrow morning and still he says "I canNOT stay home from work just because of how much snow we'll get while I'm there."

Me: "OH YES YOU CAN."

You see, he works an hour away, in Bergen County, and we have 3 kids including one infant at home. I told him if he gets stuck in a hotel up there tomorrow night I will never forgive him. He said, "yes you will, you always do." HA!

Thankfully, McGreevey has already declared a state of emergency and put the Natl Guard on notice. If I'm lucky he'll close the turnpike and parkway and my husband will be stuck here with us. :)

My husband just called from his cell as he's out to the store (we needed juice and stuff for dinner) and said "I have one observation about the grocery store. ARMAGEDDON, ARMAGEDDON, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!" :) He said people are acting nuts as usual.

Here 15 miles south of Baltimore the snow is immeasureable due to drifts, but accumulation is well over a foot. The roads are virtually impassable for any 4x2, and the impact of plows is nearly negligible

It's hard for me to tell if it has slacked off here, but it has been coming down at better than 1" an hour.

I can tell just from where I shoveled in front of my front door. There's no drifting in that area - and there is another 4" or so since I shovelled - which was less than 4 hours ago.

Imagine you are within snowball distance. You know what's coming your way! I imagine Ottsville is beginning to get their snow now. We were the last in the area to get it; it's just begun to stick. Hurricane Schwartz assures us that we're gonna see between 14-22" before this is done. My mom was supposed to head to FL on Tuesday. Hope she can get out of VA!

The map FNC weather was just showing has my area getting 4-8". I hate to tell them we've already had more than a foot.

I'm in Bucks too and we really only started to get it about an hour ago. Roads covered now. Decided I'm not going to work tomorrow.

Yes I heard about an hour ago on NJ 101.5 radio that McGreevey declared a state of emergency in New Jersey.

We did see Signs but did not see "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome".Believe me I am being very careful what I rent now.Any other suggestions?

Lot of trucks on the back roads of my town. They will not get to plowing our roads for some time. I measured in three different places, all over 12 inches of snow. Will be difficult to measure from now on, the wind is creating drifts now.

At this piont we are all tired of the snow Joe Hadenuf but I really like where we live.Glad you are happy where you are.

Don't stray too far from your house if the wind picks up. People get lost and die in blizzard conditions!

We stayed about 20 feet from the house.

I grew up in New Hampshire, and am presently awash with winter nostalgia. One time a snowplow got stuck in a huge drift on our street, and was there for 3 days. I think it snew about 6 feet that week.
