***Northeast Snowstorm*** February 16-17 2003 (Official Thread)
self | self

Posted on 02/16/2003 8:19:33 AM PST by SamAdams76

Moderators, please pull if a similar thread has been started. I did a search on "snow" and blizzard" and came up with nothing.

What originally looked to be primarily a mid-Atlantic snowstorm has blossomed overnight into a monster snowstorm that threatens to shut down the major cities of the Northeast for tomorrow.

Just got the latest forecasts. Washington D.C. area will see 1-2 feet. Philly will see 17-34 inches according to their local mets. NYC will see 1-2 feet. And Southern New England (including Boston), which was originally thought to be missing this storm, is now pegged to get at least 10-20 inches before all is said and done with possible blizzard conditions tomorrow night as the storm explodes ("bombogenisis") off Nantucket island during the day.

Some very impressive snowfall reports already coming in despite the fact that the storm hasn't even developed off the coast yet. Some 8 inches is on the ground in the DC area and snow is falling heavily in the Philly area and parts of New Jersey. This snow is NOT from the storm that is expected to develop off the Carolinas this afternoon, move northeast and "explode" off Nantucket Island during tomorrow.

These storms are never a sure thing until they happen because they are so unpredictable. But this storm has all the ingredients to make it a storm of historic proportions from Washington D.C. to Portland, Maine. If everything falls together just right, we could be looking at 2 feet (or more) of snow in many urban areas of the Northeast over the next 36 hours.

Please post your local reports here.

That is ok. I just checked accuweather, they are calling for us to get another 16 inches of snow before it ends on Tuesday.

Oh believe me, we're not going anywhere. Couldn't if we wanted to. Hubby went out on the front porch to get the Sun. paper. He got as far as the edge of the porch and couldn't go any further. Of course the paper is in the yard. Since we are located in the downtown proper, if we lose electric we will be the first to get it fixed. There are lots of perks to living in the middle of the action.

The biggest snowfall we had in Chelmsford all year was 8" about a couple weeks ago (when Boston got a foot). But we have a lot more snow on the ground than Boston because we have had many moderate snowfalls while Boston was getting rain. In fact, I think it has rained only once all year. The rest of the time, it's been just snow. Four inches here, six inches there, it all starts adding up when the weather is as cold as it's been. I would estimate we've received 60-70 inches so far.

The worst one time snow I remember here was the first winter I was here - it was around this time in 1983. I was working at the radio station and got snowed in there for 3 days.

Then a couple years later we got back to back storms. But usually Dover seems to escape - they either go south or north of us.

while I usually envy those getting the snow - I never envy those with ice - I hate ice storms.

Good luck - stay warm.

PaddyBoy, my sister is down there in Cape May County near you. Between what she is telling me and the reports SD, Dog and you are giving, I'm looking outside for that wall of snow to be running up the turnpike. Still nothing falling in Edison but it's been snowing at McGuire since about noon. I'm ready for the fun.

Hi Joe Hadenuf,We are having a Mel Gibson weekend with a nice fire and some wine ,when we run out of Mel we will begin to make our own movies

Stay in doors, drink alcohol and watch movies?

LOL! I spent time in the snow in Europe and Ohio. It sucked bad. Never want to go through that again. That's why I live on the west coast. We'll be going to the golf range in a while. But we did have some rain here!

Good luck, and best keep that fire going...

Well, this sucks. No bad-a$$ bikin' for a day or so... We got ice all over the roads, but low snow accumulation (on the order of an inch or so, I reckon) here on Virginia's east coast area...

Just talked to my bud, his family in MD says they've got near on to two feet of snow already...

hmmm...hot air ballon crew ?? something I've never considered but sounds like a lot of fun -- I watched them set-up and launch (??) a balloon that took off near us when we lived in Quakertown years ago -- looked like a lot of work but with a nice reward at the end !!

Fidget has the exact same expression my cats make when they sit in the best chair in the house -- like "I dare you to try and remove me" -- we usually give in and go sit on the couch
