Apologies for the vanity post. But I want to rant a bit.
In the past few months, ping lists have proliferated to the point of annoyance. And it is especially irksome to find oneself on a list without having requested inclusion.
There's a word for this:

Ponder this question, Chester: Did I ask to be on your #%&@ing ping list? No? Well, then. Draw the logical conclusion. If I wish to be on your ping list, rest assured you'll be the first to know. But while you wait with bated breath for my entreaty to be a party to your wisdom, I'll thank you not to make the assumption that I consider your blog indispensable.
Personally, I'd like to see pinging stopped entirely, via the placing of a limit on the number of people a post may be directed to -- preferably one, but no more than five, in my opinion. But failing that, it should at least be the case that unsolicited spam has no place on Free Republic.

I realize that this thread was pretty much exhausted a couple of days ago.
I just read it all myself this morning.
Personally, I love to be pinged. I think that is the entire pont of FR.com in the first place.
No offense, but who are these people that do not want to be pinged?
It does not compute from my perspective.
What are they doing here if they do not wish to be pinged?
I am nine years on line and I finally found a site worth supporting.

we need an opt IN program...There already is. Although I am on a lot of ping lists I still check the lists located here...as a matter of fact, until the appearant rise of the master-pingers, this was how I tracked down all info on listed/specific subjects.
Bump Lists
Works just fine for me. And if you don't want to be on someones list just request that you are taken off. Better to be solicited with info that may prove usefull, IMO, than to not receive any at all.

There are lists people keep and there are names picked up in the course of conversation on a particular thread.
I agree with you in terms of continuing lists.
In terms of who I might ping who's been involved in a discussion on a thread up to that point, then I would disagree. Once someone comments on a particular thread they are fair game whether you address your reply to 1, 2, 3 or more.
