DID I ASK TO BE ON YOUR PING LIST?

Apologies for the vanity post. But I want to rant a bit.
In the past few months, ping lists have proliferated to the point of annoyance. And it is especially irksome to find oneself on a list without having requested inclusion.
There's a word for this: .
Ponder this question, Chester: Did I ask to be on your #%&@ing ping list? No? Well, then. Draw the logical conclusion. If I wish to be on your ping list, rest assured you'll be the first to know. But while you wait with bated breath for my entreaty to be a party to your wisdom, I'll thank you not to make the assumption that I consider your blog indispensable.
Personally, I'd like to see pinging stopped entirely, via the placing of a limit on the number of people a post may be directed to -- preferably one, but no more than five, in my opinion. But failing that, it should at least be the case that unsolicited spam has no place on Free Republic.

I agree. Putting someone on a ping list without their prior consent or request is just plain rude.

Ditto. Ping lists should be banned.
What an annoyance to have to send a message to be removed. Some of the busy-bodies think that, just because you live in a particular State, you need to be notified of every little non-event pertaining to your State.
This site has deteriorated dramatically over the past few years. I could give a rats-behind about some of the postings, so I never read them. I browse headlines --- Quickly. Sorta like how I read through the voluminous material I receive every day.
My flame-retardant suit is ON. So, kiss off.

Dittos. Some of us are on 56Kb modems which makes display of "My comments" a time intensive process, especially when we're only interested in seeing our own comments and responses thereto.

Oops.. Flame-retardant suit comment not directed towards you... it's towards the morons on this site... My bad... Time for another beer.

Thirded...
Ping lists are one thing that irritates, the second is pings with graphics. I am tired of going into self search and having to wait for graphics to load...it's a pain in the ass.
Maybe we can get the JR's to delete graphics in selfsearch, or, we do away with Spamming altogether.

we need an opt IN program... not the OPT OUT "if you don't want on my ping list, please let me know... " routine of late.
FURTHERMORE, the concept of subscripted thematic selection on the left of the screen WAS supposed to be a way for us to CHOOSE article browsing lists that fit our selected key words...
In other words, I am interested in Israel's current events, so I subscribe to that... I am NOT interested in MOST religious issues, that are specific to the CATHOLIC situation at this time. Hence I do NOT subscribe to religion, though I do go there at times to see what is going on.
The ping lists need to go away.
There are folks who ping me by email when they got something hot, they KNOW I want to see... ie... whenever REAL breaking news is posted from venezuela or brazil comes up, THEY let me know.
I get a little fed up with seeing "new posts to you" and finding ten or fifteen "pingers" trying to get me to visit their thread.
I ALWAYS look for John Huang's my2cents. John is responsible in his pinging. perhaps a ping monitor would be more useful than a sidebar moderator. Not all pingers are created equal.
IE, Although I LOVE the military of america, I am not interested so much in the details of the battle of the little big horn... and don't appreciate the pings for that list.
Perhaps we need to expand the number of topics listed in the top menu, it might be better than twenty or thirty pings each day for areas that I have no interest in.
SO, count me as a third on this, if not a late "second" on this as a motion to commit to a floor vote. Ping lists need to go away or have assigned monitors who use them responsibly and update them often.

Hey Jen, just wanted to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and family.
Love the thread - and the PING's.

Well some of us need the ping list. For example I am planning the NYC party next week and its a huge time saver. Everyone who showed interest in the party is on the list and not one has asked to be removed. I will close it down next week but the point is at least for me that it is helpful in organizing. IE: also helpful in organizing protests.
If the ping list shut down and I had to individually freepmail everyone frankly I would not do it. The time spent on that would just not be worth my effort.

I will agree that the My Comments page can take a while to load, even via cable modem. I would suggest that for a future upgrade of the software, one has the option of turning off graphics on the My Comments page.
