Who's your favorite in Conservative Talk Radio?
Vanity

I have noticed the broad spectrum of "conservative" opinions that emerge from the threads on this website. There is a similar diversity of "conservative" thought in talk radio, and I was wondering which of the preeminent talk hosts you identify most with - and, of course, why you choose that particular spokesman over the others.

I also miss David. Although he could be a real pompous ass.

I never thought of him as pompous at all.

I heard a great piece on the radio a couple of weeks ago in which the guest (a former program director for several different New York stations) made some interesting comments about why hosts succeed or fail. Savage, he said, succeeds because his loud, blustery approach tends to "grab" listeners who are searching through the dial.

Given his ratings, I'd say a lot more Americans are listening than are admitting it.

Agree 100%. There are a lot of Americans who feel the way Savage does. Until he came along, we really didn't have a voice. And 300 stations, with over 60% of them being in medium to major markets, not bad for an "angry white male".

I don't think Grant broadcasts on the internet.

But will soon be able to get The Right Perspective with Frank of Queens and John from Staten Island on the net, probably in a month or so.

Meanwhile you can catch them on shortwave 7.415 Fridays at 10 PM to Midnight Eastern Standard Time.

They are like Bob Grant on steroids.

Rush had slumped a bit in the past year or so but he's improved quite a bit since his surgery. He's even dusted off some of those update themes that were once so hilarious. There's really nobody that touches Rush when he is on his game.

Anyone looking for something conservative and a bit unorthodox, might try a local show here in Austin called "The Flip Side".

http://www.590klbj.com/

It's on weekend evenings from 8p.m. CT to 10p.m. and the basic approach is one from a Christian Constitutional Conservative perspective. There are frequent discussions about the Founding Fathers and what they wrote and believed in as well as a skewering of our local PC liberals.

Thanks for posting that. I heard those guys one night on shortwave when I was out walking. Didn't have anything to write with, so I eventually forgot what night it was and what frequency they were on. THAT show was some refreshing honesty.

Umm, not to be too picky, but how old are you? Where have you been for the last eight or ten years? You didn't have a voice until Savage? I'm sure you think he's great , but everybody (even HE admits this), knows that he is to Rush what the Badfinger was to the Beatles: a pretty decent, yet very respectful ripoff of the master. Give credit where credit is due, OK?

I'm trying to figure out how this Glenn Beck got a job. The worst 3 hours of radio in my book. I have gone back to the sports talk when he is on.

I totally agree with you on all three...Rush #1, Sean #2. As far as Savage goes...I have heard him a few times but he just turns me off. I do like Michael Medved and Dennis Praeger but I can't listen to them all. Hugh Hewitt would be my #1 1/2. He is really smart and knows how to deal with the left without offending and he is fun too.

Michael Medved covers a wider range of topics than other radio hosts I have heard and handles them in a more intelligent manner.

He regularly debates liberal guests such as Noam Chomsky and handles himself admirably.

Rush has been on my dirty list ever since he took a series of cheap shots at Dubya as a ratings-raising stunt during the last ratings sweeps period.

There is only one true king (or queen) of talk radio, and that is Phil Hendrie. http://www.philhendrieshow.com/ He stands head and shoulders above el Rushbo and the pretenders. His best interviews are avalaible on CD from his web site, or via WinMx, Grokster etc.

Remarkable how much conservative talk radio there is, and how radically different radio is from television. I only listen to radio in the car, but I have to drive a fair amount so here's my rundown, in no particular order:

Rush. I listen if I'm on the road between 9 and noon, and occasionally to the "Rush replay" on KFBK Sacramento from 10pm to midnight. He's not as funny as he used to be, and he does talk about golf too much, but his recovery from hearing loss is a remarkable thing. If he was a liberal, Oprah etc. would be gushing about how brave and wonderful he is.

Dr. Bill Wattenburg. He's not a conservative in the standard sense, but he is death on environmentalists, and his knowledge and arguments are solid. He's one of the few people I know who loathes greens as much as I do. (Hi there, Grampa Dave.) He's got a wealth of scientific and practical knowledge that makes him perhaps the best informational broadcaster I have ever heard. He's on KGO San Francisco, but the hours are irregular - lately he's been filling in for the aforementioned Gene Burns. If you want to know more about him, there's a fan website at http://www.pushback.com/Wattenburg. It amazes me that he emanates from a sick sick sleazeville like Sin Freaksicko.

Dennis Prager. The best of the socially and morally-oriented talkers. Some of you are of course more tuned in to economics and national defence, but there aren't enough articulate family values conservatives out there. BTW, although this guy is so polite and nice he can remind you of the Stuart Smalley character on SNL, he drives immoralist liberals into apoplexy. He's got his own website too, at http://www.dennisprager.com.

Dr. Laura. I used to be very down on her, and her voice is hardly ideal for radio. Then I worked for a couple of weeks with a group of women in an office who listened to her every afternoon. I changed my mind. Laura is great because 1. she insists on putting the interests of children first, which of course enrages single mothers and casual divorcees 2. she understands that "blended families" are a bad idea, and that fairy tales aren't full of evil step-parents for nothing 3. she understands that a lot of "therapy" is either useless or positively harmful 4. she understands that making everything a question of mental illness that can be treated both destroys moral reality and increases the income of therapists and finally 5. she never bashes men as a class, and expects men to act and feel like men and women to act and feel like women. All that said, I don't actually listen to her that often on my own initiative :-) . John Carlson. If the reception is good enough or I'm close enough to Seattle, I check out John. He's articulate and classy, and so not often flustered by the liberal callers that the area unfortunately has no shortage of.

You'll love Mark Scott!

From his website:

"Mark Scott" interviews the newsmakers. Mark Scott is a newsmaker. Dynamic, provocative, spontaneous… Mark explores the hottest news topics and issues of the day with the names in and behind the headlines. He tackles some of the toughest subjects with some of the brightest minds in the country… public officials, media mavens, tough minded individuals… from business entrepreneur to journalists and famous authors… including sexologists, warriors and porn stars.

There are no sacred cows in his arena, as Mark explores popular and unpopular points of view, from all sides of the issue.

Noted for his incisive interviewing technique, Mark brings to his talk show experience as a news anchor, investigative reporter and news analyst. He is a lightning rod that sparks controversy.

And in the game of cat and mouse he's not intimidated by his guests…

In Martial Arts, Mr. Scott holds a Nidan ranking in Judo, Ju Jitsu and Kempo Karate and currently trains in Pentjak Silat and Kali.

U.S.M.C - Honorable Discharge SEMPER FI

Mark Scott literally kicks liberal @ss!

I don't agree 100% with everything he says (he's pro-abortion, for one thing) but he is very intelligent and is a very logical thinker.

THAT show was some refreshing honesty.

They seem to be just two ordinary guys who called regular talk radio, and got tired of being cut-off whenever they raised particularly controversial points--so they got together and started their own show.

The astounding thing is how good their show is despite their being amateurs--and I think it's so good precisely because there's no censorship of ideas--and no censorship of emotion--it's genuine and not an act.

Where else can you hear a certain Cuban dictator called a bearded-cigar-chewing-maggot and a certain middle aged singer called "that anus with a nose"--all said in the most delightful blue collar down-to-earth NYC accents.

And they really don't care much for the "Stinkin' French!"

It took me a while to figure out what he was doing, but now I think he is great. He is one talk show you really need to pay attention to otherwise you'll not get it.
