Well, some people said that this attack was a false alarm.
We know better now.

Well, it had to come to this. It either gets settled in the legislature or the courts because Eastin doesn't have a leg to stand on regarding the R4 affidavits and she knows it. There are how many homeschoolers in CA? Something like 122,000 registered? They better call their legislators and work something out that will be beneficial to them. Don't think the legislature is going to give Eastin everything she wants. She's one person, one vote, that's all. There is power in numbers.

Is Delaine one of those made-up names like Kishandra or Vanaqua?

I'm a homeschooler in CA. With the current budget impass, could anything be done before the filing dates of Oct. 1-15?
I would hope that with no budget, that would have to take priority over homeschool legislation at the present, or does this just play into those greedy control freaks hands?

Translation of Superintendent Eastin's letter from NEA-speak to plain English:
"Over the last few weeks, the Department of Education has been characterized in some circles as being engaged in a campaign to harass home schoolers and to root out home schooling in California.
People are accusing us of trying to make all children wards of the state.
None of these charges is true, of course, but the amount of misinformation, and passion, in these communications does make me believe that the situation cries out for a legislative solution."
They're absolutely right. We really do want all children to become wards of the state, and we want you to pass a law requiring all parents to hand their kids over.
"if home schooled children ... were exempted from compulsory education laws by the mere filing of an affidavit ... then there would be potentially thousands of children in California whose education would not be subject to any supervision whatsoever."
We wouldn't be able to turn all those kids into mindless zombies. And think of all the money and power we would lose, not to mention our jobs.

What passes for a "public" educational system in California would be a joke if the results of 30 years of socialist nonsense wasn't so tragic. Socialism is a disease. That can be seen with the steady decline in academics in California. Ms. Eastin is not just a moronic do-gooder, she is part of the problem. In fact, "education" is the wrong word for what transpires in California government schools. A far better word would be "indoctrination" or, to invent a word, "propagandization".
The emphasis has shifted so that academic excellence has been replaced by a far higher goal: that of teaching diversity. SAT scores and other forms of standardized testing demonstrate this in spades. That's why the educrats want to do away with these yardsticks of performance.
If industry was run in this way, the entire system would have become bankrupt. Teachers should be held accountable for the "products" they turn out, just like the manufacturers of other "goods". Pay and raises should be merit-based, just like in my company. Pay for Excellence. Pink slips for Incompetence. Its as simple as that. Eastin wants to do away with any competition in the field of education, because such competition demonstrates just how rotten public "education" has become.
The teachers unions have become money funnels to the demonRAT/Socialists; its a big "circle jerk". The students well-being has taken a back seat to the unions. Want real change? Destroy the teachers unions.

We are home schoolers in California and long-time members of HSLDA. I appreciate their notice.
However, today is the last session of the Legislature. Constitutionally, they must adjourn at midnight (although they tend to "stop the clock" to finish-up pending business). If the legislature does not pass a budget, they may be called back by Gov. Davis into special session. But the session must be defined, and only bills pertaining to that definition or scope can be introduced. It doesn't look to me that Eastin is proposing any specific legislation on homeschooling, but urges the Legislature to "look at" homeschooling. Now, I don't trust Delaine Eastin any more than I trust the leftist majority of the Legislature. But considering the restrictions put on a special session of the Legislature that might be called on the budget situation (which, to my knowledge, hasn't been called yet, and my not be called until after the election!), any consideration of homeschool legislation will not take place until the new Legislature is seated next year.
While I don't think there is a reason to panic, I would encourage people to make their views known on homeschooling to their legislators, since Ms. Eastin has raised the issue.

Delaine Eastin:

WHAAAAT?!!
To: Carry_Okie
BTW, all three of our children have been homeschooled for the past 12 years. Each of them has passed high school, and now attend college, and are B+-to-A students. Each finished in the top 3% in SAT scores. Let Delaine Eastin find something wrong with that.

I think I was the first to post a story about this, after hearing the notorious 'Directive' read on the air on the Roger Hedgecock Show in San Diego. I'm sorry to see that it's turned out to be as bad as it seemed.
I think you home schoolers should just sponsor a ballot initiative to cement your right to educate your own kids into the state constitution. You'll be fought tooth and nail by the CTA, but I think there are still enough liberty-loving people in this state to pass such a measure. Relying on the courts to protect you strikes me as a last resort, particularly in this state.
