When I was stationed in Alabama I took my family to visit the capitol several times. We always had to go see the star that is embedded in the spot where Davis took his oath of office. Don't know if it is still there or not. Probably been removed by the revisionists.

“This is a little hard to take,” said Hamilton Cooke of Jacksonville, Fla.

What, Mr. Cooke? The truth? Shaking the foundations of the revisionist history you've been taught in public education centers?

Happy Birthday, President Davis

Alabama Secession Flag

Unfortunately, the only accurate description of this flag is the one that appeared in the newspaper shortly after the flag was raised. After the war the flag was taken to Iowa where it deteriorated and eventually fell to pieces. In 1939, the flag was returned to Alabama . The fragments had been glued to a sheet and sewn into a protective netting. Fragments (the few that remained ) from both sides had been arranged into what might best be describe as a collage. So there is no one alive today who has actually seen the flag intact. Any illustrations that you may have seen are all conjectural and may be traced to the description which appeared in the Montgomery Weekly Advertiser on January 16, 1861. This description was reprinted and widely distributed when the flag was returned in 1939. Almost immediately, drawings based upon this description began to appear and to evolve. Ultimately your supposition is as good as any. We do know however that the background is dark blue, there is only one cotton plant/rattlesnake motif and the flag that she is holding has the word ALABAMA printed above the star. The rattlesnake had 15 rattles representing the slave states.

Just about all of the confederate memorials have been purged in Montgomery. They've been replaced by plaques showing where MLK scratched his backside. Its sad what they've done.

What a sad commentary on our times. It was always a good history lesson for my boys. It always amazed them that they could actually stand on the same spot as Jefferson Davis. Guess that part of our history is supposed to be forgotten. No, I don't think so.

There's a story about the yankee soldiers who captured Jefferson Davis. They were transporting him north, toward the prison where he would spend two years, not charged with a crime.

Passing some Confederate veterans traveling home, the blue belly taunted them: "Hey, Johnny Reb, we've got your president."

"Yessir," the butternut soldier replied, "and the devil's got yours."

Enough said.

Well I hope Mr. Cooke didn't let the proverbial door hit him in the @ss when he left, there was no reason to be offended by this. I hate people that have such a chip on their shoulder that they look for a confrontation where ever they go, Mr. Cooke stay at the house I'm sure nobody there will offend you.

My favorite Southern flag....add a magnolia and it's the original flag of my homestate. I wear it proudly as the front tag of my beat up old Land Rover.

Six state governors acted as pallbearers. Thousands attended the service in Hollywood cemetery. including former Confederate military leaders and privates, where with the Presidential twenty-one gun salute the beloved leader was laid to rest.

Let me echo that sentiment! Happy Birthday Mr. President! May we never forget that you stood for the Constitution while the devil held Washington.
