Talk about skeletons in the closet - Shannon O'Brien is married to Enron Emmet Hayes, Tom Birmingham's bride makes $148,000 a year working for a guy named Bulger, and if Robert Reich had any more problems with the facts in his printed works, he could be a columnist for the Globe. You're Mitt Romney, and you learned long ago at Harvard that nature abhors a vacuum, which is what acting Gov. Jane Swift's administration has become, a vacuum, a void, a black hole of nothingness. Which is why, if you're not in the governor's race by Wednesday, Jim Rappaport will be, and that explains why he took the hit in the paper yesterday for getting behind on his child support. The Swift gang is like al-Qaeda in Afghanistan - they're finished and they know it, but you still can't get too close because they may yet have enough Stinger missiles to bring down a helicopter or two. You're Mitt Romney, and no, you will not be doing any one-on-one interviews with Andy Hiller or Suzy Wetlaufer. And one word your father taught you to never, ever use: ``brainwashed.'' You're Mitt Romney, and the wiseguys are saying you've got a problem with your wife, Ann, because she has no desire to return to this rotten state to mix it up for eight months. So what - how much time did Jody King spend in Massachusetts when Ed King was governor? Did Susan Roosevelt do a lot of meet 'n' greets? And then there's Chuck Hunt. You're Mitt Romney, and you have no comment - absolutely none - on Chuck Hunt. The polygamy issue cuts both ways this year. You're Mitt Romney, and you know that if ever there was a good time to not run for political office here as a non-Catholic, this is it. Even the very devout and tolerant Kennedy family won't have time to slur your religion this year, because they'll be too busy commuting back and forth to cousin Mike's murder trial down in Connecticut. You're Mitt Romney, and the one thing you've got to do is convince everybody that you won't melt down in the final the way you did in the Faneuil Hall debate against Ted Kennedy in 1994. No more Mr. Nice Guy, Mitt. You need to call House Speaker Tom Finneran, who used to be Jane Swift's biggest booster mainly because as long as she's in the Corner Office, taking three or four months off at a stretch, he's the real governor. You're Mitt Romney, and you know Finneran hates Birmingham, and he fears Reich, so it's either you or Shannon, and he doesn't much care which one of you it is, as long as he keeps getting his judges and clerkships. When Tom Finneran is comparing the current logjam at the State House to the ``late '80s,'' he's not so subtly saying that Jane Swift is as bad as M. Stanley Dukakis in the final days, and as hard as it is to imagine, her poll numbers may actually be weaker than the Duke's. Vote Swift-Guerriero - one of them isn't under investigation by the FBI. Re-elect Swift and protect your right to commit pension fraud. There's only one person Jane Swift might be able to beat in the primary, and his name is Bernard Cardinal Law. Maybe. She's the one who has to worry about getting 15 percent at the convention in Lowell, not you. You're Mitt Romney, and when you're asked, you say Christy Mihos and Jordan Levy are the salt of the earth, and as for those $12 tolls, you're against 'em, and when you're governor, there won't be any more mob guys appointed to the Massport board, and Joe Malone's driver is getting the boot from the MDC, and . . . You're Mitt Romney, and this is all you need to say. Let's roll.

Shannon O'Brien is one of the Democratic candidates for governor and her husband, Enron Emmet Hayes, was making six figures a year as a "lobbyist" for Enron here in Massachusetts. Tom Birmingham is another candidate for governor and his wife is on Billy Bulger's payroll at UMass. Billy Bulger once ran the state senate and is one of the most infamous "hacks" in Boston, putting all his cronies and relatives (and girlfriends of cronies and relatives) on public payrolls to buy their loyalty. He is also the brother of one Whitey Bulger, a mobster on the lam who is currently on the FBI's "most wanted" list. Bulger is currently president of UMass.

Jim Rappaport is one of the top Republicans in Massachusetts and recently lost a senate bid to John Kerry. He is currently running for Lt. Governor and hopes to be Mitt Romney's running mate, although if Mitt doesn't enter the race (now unlikely), he will run for governor instead. In Massachusetts, the race for Governor and Lt. Governor are separate so it is possible to have a "hostile" running mate. Acting Gov. Jane Swift hates Jim Rappaport. Rappaport's ex-wife is claiming that he is late on his child support payments and that story was leaked yesterday to the Herald by Rappaport (on a weekend) to get it behind him. A classic Clinton tactic.

Andy Hiller is a local reporter made famous for asking then-candidate GWB about who the leader was in Pakistan (he didn't know at the time). Suzy Wetlaufer write for the Harvard Business Review and has a similar reputation for putting conservatives (but not liberals) on the spot.

Mitt's wife Ann is planning on staying in Utah during the campaign. Ed King was a one-term GOP governor (between the Dukakis administrations) whose wife continued to live out of state during his short reign. Chuck Hunt is the stay-at-home husband of Jane Swift who was discovered to have two, then three, then four ex-wives. Also, his son (from a previous marriage) is "gay" and has come out against Jane Swift. This might explain why Jane handpicked a gay person (Guerriero) be her running mate. Not only is Guerriero openly gay but he is under investigation by the FBI for "irregularities."
And there you have it, a crash-course in the wacked out politics of Massachusetts. And this is only the tip of the iceberg!
No, but this is a typical Howie Carr column, full of insider stuff and disdain for the cesspool that is MA politics. His radio show is hilarious, by the way.
You have to have a voice. How can you change minds without a voice? Your kind of thinking is why you'll never get a majority.

With that line of thinking, you might as well just surrender the country to socialism right now. The Republicans are dooming themselves if they decide to write off entire chunks of the country as you appear willing to do. The Democrats don't give up as easily. They go into Republican strongholds all the time and give it their best shot. Sometimes they even win which is why we now have Democrats elected in such conservative bastions as Oklahoma, Texas and Nevada. In fact, both North and South Dakota voted for Bush/Cheney in 2000 and generally vote Republican in all presidential elections, but ALL FOUR senators from those two states are Democrats. Why? Because the Democrats don't have the "give up and surrender" mentality that the Republicans have thanks to folks like you.
There is a large population of people up here that do not vote Democrat, cannot move and do not like the dissing this state keeps getting from uninformed and ignorant individuals. I am one of them. SamAdams76 is another.

Thanks for the play by play! I live here and didn't know most of this stuff, then why would I because I don't subscribe to ANY of the MA papers, either the local rag(T&G) or the Boston GLOB! I figure if it has to do with MA politics it has to do with liberals, so I just ignore them until its time for the elections and I try to pick the most conservative candidates. But this being MA, sometimes the Democrat is more conservative than the Reublican!! One of my favorite politicians here is John Silber who I happily voted for in lieu of Bill Weld!
and sometimes, even more conservative than the REPUBLICAN! (DOH!)
I'm probably the wrong one to ask. Although I was born 5 miles from Boston, my family moved to the more conservative NH when I was 9 years old. Many people have done the same which is why Southern NH has been one of the fastest growing parts of the country in the past 15 years.
MA is essentially a one party state with an occasional Republican voted in for Gov. while NH is the opposite. NH still has a strong Republican party and the races are closely fought in most years. Unfortunately, some of the people moving in from more heavily taxed states has made NH gradually more left-leaning in the past 20 years. They are used to big-government and that's what they vote for, not realizing smaller government makes for lower taxes. (DUH!)
Also, to make matters worse, the City of Boston and the state of MA have had problems with corruption, nepotism, the Mob and since my father's side of the family arrived there (late 1890's) and probably before that.
