Revenge killings among drug gangs have fuelled an explosion in gun murders in Britain. According to latest figures the number of gun murders in London has leapt by 90% this year.
In April to November 2001 there were 30, compared to 16 in the same period last year. This year 16 of the murders were 'black on black' killings compared to nine last year, an increase of 77%.
All-night garages
There were more shootings in the trendy West End rather than in boroughs like Lambeth, Hackney and Brent.
At least two people a day are now robbed at gunpoint in London.
Armed robbers are also increasingly targeting all-night garages, off licences and shops rather than banks and cash in transit.
Jamaica drug route
Commander Alan Brown of Operation Trident said there were "clear links" in many gun murders to Jamaica, the major drug route into this country. But he added: "If we take someone out there is an immediate struggle to take over the drug dealing of that particular gang." Detectives estimate as much as four tonnes of cocaine is making its way into London through drug mules - mostly women - travelling from Jamaica on commercial flights each year.
It is all over the net. None of the postings will list the source, though.
Good believable story. It is up their with my favorite where a burglar was caught breaking into the same house to steal the remote control he had forgotten for the television he had stolen in a previous break in.
Nonetheless, I am not--NOT--NOT!!!--advocating England-style gun laws in the U.S. There are two different countries, different cultures, and what makes sense in one country doesn't always make sense in another.

The Drug problem.
I wonder what the School Janitor thinks of drugs to legalise or to not legalise.
I wait his thoughts on this.

Are you. A load of us Brit freepers are getting together for a boozing session, you are more than welcome to come along if you are in London end of Jan.

Shooting More Holes in Gun Control
Ok then what about this Ha Ha Ha Ha.
I think you are right about being uneducated or maybe just guilty of not thinking things through.
I dont understand a lot of you yanks, you start a thread bashing some one elses country, and act surprised if we bite back.
I spent about 13 years of my life serving my Country I love my country and will defend it either physically of verbally especially against the self righteous types who are attracted to foreigner bashing threads.
re : Yeah, I've never dealt with this attitude before.
You will find that a crappy attitude tends to attract crappy attitude's like to like and all that.

That is what caused the Hand Gun Ban in Britain.
The Drug War.
The only criminals using guns were and to a certain extents still are the drug gang's.
Its not Guns that are the problem but the drugs and the crime linked to supplying it.

At least two people a day are now robbed at gunpoint in London.
That's TWO gunpoint robberies per day in a city of 8 million.
I wonder how many gunpoint robberies there are in
Chicago + Houston + Phoenix + Jacksonville + Detroit combined (total population 7.7 million)
But perhaps we are comparing apples with elephants. Hmmm. Lets say the 2 per day means ONLY inner London (Population 2.5 million)
OK .. that's Portland, Oregon + Fort Worth, Texas, + Cleveland, Ohio + Tulsa, Oklahoma, + Minneapolis, Minnesota + Wichita, Kansas.
Anyone care to bet on whether there are more than 2 gunpoint robberies each day in ALL of those? Or even in ONE of those?
I am not decrying your right to bear arms. And in the US, the sheer number of firearms means you can never have effective gun-control, even if you wanted to.
But please don't think that those of us in nations that are NOT awash in firearms share your passion for an armed society.

Dunno. How long WERE the Watts riots, by the way?
Or the St Petersberg Spring Break riots?
Or the Battle for Seattle?
And armed society didn't shorten those riots .. and, in at least one case, it lengthened the insurrection, didn't it?

LOL! I'll raise you one Austin Powers to your Jed Clampett...
