I don't know but have you tried upgrading to Netscape 6.2? It certainly works for most of the web pages out there...

That browser is over two years old, which means that it has not been updated to utilize newer features and technology. Netscape 6.2 has been out for some time now, as well as Internet Explorer 5.5-6.0. In a word: upgrade.

I'm using Netscape 1.0 with a Timex Sinclair, and I can't even read this page.

The solution? Dump your Netscape.

I got rid of Netscape long ago after putting up with the hassles. Why knock yourself out? Just about every computer out there uses Microsoft operating systems. I figured if I wanted less hassles when surfing the net, I might as well use Explorer and Outlook Express for e-mail, both by Microsoft. Sure, they're not perfect, but for me, they're a lot less hassle than Netscape was.

Working cool for me.

And to all you upgrade/ dump netscape people. I would if any of the alternatives didn't suck eggs. Netscape 6 is a bigger POS than any version of IE (I can't believe the way the F'd up the back button), and IE sucks, can't stand the layout of that pile the whole screen is filled with IE and there's no room left to browse the internet.

Might I suggest Opera, don't give in to Microcrap. It's here , I feel it's faster and has better features than IE.

I noticed the same thing - it started this past Saturday or so. It seems to be a page rendering anomaly related to html tables. You should also notice a "hesitation" of sorts between the time that the html is received by your computer and the time the actual text comes up.

As a netscape 4 user, I notice more pages that trigger this bug as time goes on. I will likely switch, but to mozilla, which I've been using on my solaris/linux/bsd systems for the last few months, rather than IE.

Try upgrading to Netscape 4.79. New version just came out last month for the 4 series browsers. Stay away from Netscape 6. It's a dog, imho.

Netscape version-anything sucks

I wanted to be a IE-Rebel for years but finally caved, Netscape is not Java-friendly and I went through crash-after-crash until I dumped it.

Of course IE isnt perfect and someone will also find a new way to put crazy pop-up ads and other Java-crap on their websites to annoy us and confuse the best of browser software.

I've had the same problem for about a week. Formerly, Netscape returned to where I left off. There has been an apparent program change at Freerepublic that causes it.

Funny, I'm using Netscape Communicator 4.0.2, and I don't have the problem you describe.

Whenever people report irreproducible problems in non-Microsoft products, I become suspicious about them possibly being in the pay of Microsoft. Please forgive me for expressing that suspicion now, but we've seen an awful lot of Microsoft cheerleading articles recently.

I have netscape 4.5 running off AOL on a 6500 Mac (OS8) with 32mgs of ram. Getting more than a few sites which lock me up and force a restart. Yeah, I could upgrade but I'm not about to give in. I don't want games, I don't want fancy graphics, all I use the net for is to read and, on occasion, write. FR's software is wonderful. Fast loading and easy to navigate. It may get to the point where I go nowhere else. But most everything of interest is here anyways.

My netscape 4.75 browser back button returns to the top of the page rather than the area of post of the article. This browser works on other web pages. Does anyone know what causes this?

Mine is doing the same thing. I think it may have something to do with the CPAC banner code on the "latest posts" page, but I'm not positive. Started happening the same time that banner first appeared. I'll try to do some tests when I get a chance.
