Did Jay Leno Really Say This?
My Bartender | HalfIrish

Posted on 09/25/2001 4:10:41 PM PDT by HalfIrish

I apologize if this has been covered. I searched for Leno and Tonight Show and got nothing.

I was told that Jay Leno cracked wise about Cher in his monologue last night and the joke bombed. So he said something to the effect, "What do you want from me? I can't do Bush jokes anymore. All of a sudden he's a smart guy!" This "gem" bombed as well.

I'd like confirmation or straightening out. Whichever is applicable, please. I find it hard to believe it was that bad. Surely it would have been covered here if it was.

Thanks.

Late at night, about 1 or 2 AM ET, some NBC stations rerun "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" from the day before ( Mondays's show could air at 2AM tonight, Wednesday in the early AM, sometimes they get a few days behind) Let your VCR do the job. Check your local listings.

Once upon a time, late night talk shows were actually quite interesting to watch and the guests actually engaged in REAL CONVERSATIONS.

I could not agree more. The difference between then and now, I believe, is that back then people were more themselves when doing the rounds of the talk shows. You could gain real insight from what they said and how they said it.

Today, all the plastic folks are only there to push their latest projects and get face time. The "stars" of today (with very few exceptions) have nothing of substance to say, and when they do, they merely push some (usually) socialist agenda.

Entertainers have gone the way of the dinosaur.

True. It's all in the delivery, though. Hence the question. I know my source thought it was snide and smart alecky.

"maybe he's angry that GWB is going to finish the job" Or that GWB did not give the job to Jay Leno to finish. After all, Richard Gere was in charge of China/Tibet. Ahhhh! Where the heck is that sick bag...

It would be nice, before everyone piles on someone, if they could bother getting what he said right. Here it is, verbatim:

Leno did a joke about Cher that bombed, then he said, "Well, we can't do Bush jokes! He's smart now!"

This got applause from the audience. And he didn't say it in a snide or sarcastic manner. He was smiling, and I took it as a self-deprecating line; that he realized those old "dumb Bush" jokes were on the "unmarked grave of discarded ideas," and any future "dumb" jokes would have to be aimed at a new target. I'd suggest Cher.

Hey Leno, Clinton and Gore are still around to be kicked. Come around here once in a while for some lessons.

Well, sorta. He goes by pseudonym "Whorealdo Rivero" or some such. Whorealdo is on some obscure cable connection.

Informational Note: He hasn't been given Tom Brokeass's job yet.

Thanks for straightening that out. The fellow who reported it to me sometimes sees things through his jaundiced eye. That's why I asked about it in the first place.

He gave a wonderful tribute to President Bush. He said he had been wrong about him and said he was proud to call him "my President". It was quite moving actually.

Did Geraldo bow a kiss to GWB like he always did to Clinton? If not; then I'd doubt his sincerity! (grin)
