Analysis from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) reveals that hospitals used artificial intelligence (AI) tools to hike healthcare spending by nearly a billion dollars over a two-year-period.
The Daily Caller reports that a new study from BCBSA shows that a major rise in patients being documented as having complex conditions led to $942 million in additional medical care costs for Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies between 2023 and 2025.
Insurers and consumer advocates warn that these AI-fueled billing practices will ultimately push up insurance premiums and out-of-pocket expenses for families and employers.
The BCBSA’s report “raises concerns” that the widespread adoption of AI coding tools is driving higher healthcare spending in the U.S., according to the Daily Caller.
BCBSA Senior Vice President of Product and Data Science Luke Chalker said in a statement:
If patients are truly sicker, we’d expect to see more treatment. For example, we’re seeing significantly more anemia diagnoses at these hospitals without a corresponding increase in transfusions. The disconnect between diagnoses and treatment suggests that AI is identifying more billable conditions, not sicker patients.
The Daily Caller reports that the research shows roughly $650 million of the increased costs for BCBS companies from 2023 to 2025 can be traced to secondary diagnoses that shifted claims into a higher-reimbursement category.

Typical insurance talk for saying they don’t want to pay the bills. This is the kind of thing that makes people root for Luigi Mangione.
Since the AI program belongs to and is run by the medical profession and the insurance companies, the sicker the targeted patient the more detailed and sophisticated the treatment.
Thus AI helps to raise two important sources of revenue: a bigger medical bill to fill the wallets and bank accounts of the vast medical indusry; higher premiums for patient's medical insurance to fill the wallets and bank accounts of the vast Insurance Industry.

If I can do it, most people can do it. I had several health issues in my mid-50’s. I changed my lifestyle. Gave up alcohol, quit my high pay job, and began walking 30 miles every week. Every one of my health issues disappeared one by one. At age 86, I do not need any prescriptions, do not need have any pains or aches, and have BP 120/75, blood glucose in normal range. Just had a bone density test, and result said my numbers are same as a healthy man of age 30. My daily exercise now is beach walk for 30 minutes every day. On bad weather days I walk indoors on treadmill.
Having zero medical expenses is a huge bonus for living a financially stress free life.

The whole health care system is based on fraudulent charges and confusion. You login to your health care provider and it’s almost impossible to understand what charges have been paid and what you may owe. They label the invoice with “You may not owe this bill” but without jumping thru hoops you have no way of knowing unless you backtrack for hours. They purposely enable confusion in hopes some people will send in more money after the charge was already paid or deducted from the agreed upon price with the physician or lab. It’s a big scam and should be on DOGE’s list of things to do. President Trump should have been on this early.
AI will demand more trials by ordeal aka “medical testing” just to check more boxes for Medi”care” billing and build a stronger defense for malpractice suits.
I’ll trust not-so-”intelligent’ humans relying on experience and whole person observation.

One of the Dems in Michigan for a House seat is defiantly saying she will top the ultrarich from exploiting AI to raise prices for their benefit. Along with the costs passed to the homeowners near the data centers.
She sounds convincing and may win. We are in deep trouble.
I can barely imagine the bribes going to politicians to benefit the data center owners now.
AI will probably stop any cures for diseases because a cure means a little money but ongoing treatments makes a fortune for decades to come. As: polio ended by Salk vaccines. But diabetes and heart trouble brings strips, monitoring devices, many doctor’s office visits, tests and re-tests, Big Pharma prescriptions and the pharmacies’ profits, special diets and various advice systems online. Plenty of money until a cure is found for either one.
Since fat loss injections were ok’d, in the past year $125 Billion was spent by consumers.

I just turned 80 this year and have had a foreboding feeling of being on borrowed time more than at age 79.
Hearing your story encourages me. I do the walking thing and never smoked and never drank since a very small amount of beer once in a while I stopped about 1979. But we are all in God’s hands so no bragging is right from me. My late wife suddenly stopped breathing one morning at home, no hospitalization or being in medical danger we knew of. Scary.
Key point to keep always in mind.
My next door neighbor and friend had similar experience. When I saw an ambulance pulled into his driveway I called him to learn what happened. He was still pretty much in shock and said "I don't know what happened. She wasn't sick or anything. She just keeled over on me and was gone."
No ifs ands or buts. When its check-out time, the Lord will call us home.
I am 88, not doing quite as good as yourself, but doing pretty well under Medicare,Well Care, & VA care. What I’m wondering is how this will affect the care we get mainly through the VA if it is anything serious. Hospitalization IS serious & being as I’m living on SS anyway,I’m wondering how I will be affected costwise if any more health problems show up. Generally speaking, I have been against AI from the start in many areas.

So next year Big Insurance will use AI to deny Hospital AI claims.
