PORT ORANGE, Florida (WESH) -- Video released by the Port Orange Police Department shows officers firing more than a dozen times at a 71-year-old woman who showed up armed with a gun.
Surveillance video shows the woman, Linda Jean Croteau, walking into the lobby of the station holding the gun and firing it one time.
She then exited the front lobby and was confronted by officers who were responding to the scene.
She is told to drop the weapon but does not comply.
An officer fires three times, and Croteau falls to the ground. She sits up, appears to reach for the gun, then officers fire another 10 times, audio reveals.
She was taken to a hospital where she died.
Caleb Lemons, who was working across the street, saw it all unfold.
"She walked out of the front door like a zombie," Lemons said.
WESH 2 spoke with Linda Croteau’s stepson, Erik Croteau, by phone. He shared she had lost her husband in August and was struggling with the loss.
"We really have no idea why my stepmother would do what she did. She was a wonderful person,” he said. “We talked with her the night before it happened, and she sounded fine. We were getting ready to move her to Georgia.”

You wonder what goes through someone's MIND while they're PLANNING this disaster for all concerned.
I feel exctly the same as if a stupid, stupid man did the same thing. The only difference is they all would have emptied their weapons firing at him, he would have a lot more holes than she did.
Over a dozen shots and she didn’t die instantly?
What were these cops using for ammo?
Sounds like suicide by cop....crazy.
Kinda my initial thought, too. The first three should’ve taken her down, but I’m sure she was running on pure adrenaline at that point.
Sad situation. Our cops don’t get enough credit for dealing with all of these lunatics...on a DAILY basis...all over the USA!
I’m sure there’s a lawsuit in the making. *SPIT*
"He's still alive. They hit him with 5 shots, and he's still alive. Well, that's bad luck for me and bad luck for you."
At least she was getting herself dead and not her children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren.
beat me by 90 seconds
“At least she was getting herself dead and not her children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren.”
She HAD a gun. If you’re so miserable in this world, why not just OFF YOURSELF in the privacy of your own home and leave everyone else alone?
Why the big PRODUCTION? Yeesh! These Drama Queens! Leaving such a path of destruction behind them! Grrrr!
Florida Woman?
If police decide to look into her laptop’ search history, they may find questions to AI, such as
“What minimal kinds of behavior must a person exhibit before police shoot to kill you?
She did everything you’re not supposed to do if you want to keep living. She boldly walked right into their lair, into the Police Station during the sunlit working day hours. They could not ignore her. She made sure they saw her holding a pistol. When she shot it, the kick-back kind of startled her, but she quickly recovered her composure and intent.
She turned a deaf ear to any and all commands shouted to her by the Cops. Moving and exiting when told not to.
She brazenly approached the ‘bank’ of Cop cars now all lined up in front of her. Then they shot with a broad spray of bullets. Some, Cops probably shot not meaning to hit the poor woman.
She went down, then forced the police to act yet again, as she made attempts to sit up and reach for the weapon yet again. She forced their hand in killing her.
Grief of a loved one, feelings of desolation, can be expressed in all sorts of ways. It’s terrible she decided to pull all of these people into that grief with her.
They should not be allowed pistols until they learn how to use them. My younger son served in Marine Presidential Security forces his first job out of high school. I saw him hit a 20 gal propane container 12 out of 14 times with a Glook pistol at a range of 50 yards.
Re “… what goes through a person’s mind…”
Probably “end the pain now”
Pretty damn tragic either way.
But do not make it someone else's problem.
That is selfish and cruel.
Linda Jean Croteau — a Haitian Zombie. Yes, I'm serious. They take jungle herbals and other biologic drugs which induce a Zombie state. Pufferfish toxin, for example. This has all the hallmarks of toxin induced zombie state.
"Forget about it, Jake. It's Haiti Town."
Yes-
My guess also: suicide by cop.
Husband died.
71 years old.
No real prior criminal history.
About to get moved away from Florida (her home) to Georgia.
Just a sad story-
Dead Florida Woman. What am AWESOME LEGACY to leave your family!
At Christmastime: “Remember the year when Grandma committed ‘Suicide By Cop?’ Good times!
Glad I had a Grandma that was an Artisanal Baker before it became cool, and taught me her ways. And my other Grandma that taught me how to appreciate the Arts! (Literature, Theater, Music).
Again, SELFISH path of destruction, harming so many left behind!
What does 71 have to do with it?
She shoulda focused on wearing Cheese Head [or Orange or Peach] hats.
Much healthier.
Psychotic depression
Lack of sleep for several weeks.
Complete loss of judgment
Tragic.
No one at fault
