President Donald Trump is eyeing oil-rich Venezuela as a potential 51st state as officials continue to court oil companies for investments in the South American country following the U.S. intervention that removed President Nicolás Maduro from power.
Trump said in a phone call with Fox News that he is motivated by the estimated $40 trillion value of oil in Venezuela, adding that he is popular with the country’s citizens.
“Venezuela loves Trump,” Trump said. […]
“As the President has said, relations between Venezuela and the United States have been extraordinary. Oil is starting to flow, and large amounts of money, unseen for many years, will soon be helping the great people of Venezuela,” a White House spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “Only President Trump can be credited for the revitalization of this newfound partnership — and the best is yet to come!”
The spokesperson did not provide details about what Trump’s plan to make Venezuela a part of the United States would look like. …

Trump considers a lot of things.
50 states is enough... or maybe even a few too many. We don’t need Venezuela, Greenland, Canada, Cuba or the Duchy of Grand Fenwick added to the country.
After what the country has been through they’d probably welcome it. Do it on the condition of deporting the gang-bangers to El Salvador.
Give them an out after 20 years. Vote on it. It’s about the Benjamins.
Just no.
Venezuela can pay reparations. We’ll keep Alberta.
What happened to Greenland? Making Iran Great Again no longer on the menu?
Greenland and Alberta...yes.
Venezuela...NO!
Does it mean, we get back the Tren de Aragua people we just deported?
As a state, Venezuela would rank as the third largest by population, making it a major political force, with 36 seats in the House of Representatives and 38 Electoral College votes.
Moreover, it would give Americans living in the other 50 states the freedom to move to Venezuela without navigating the currently cumbersome process of emigrating to the country.
I thought this was The Onion. At this point, I think that’s where this really belongs.
Venezuelan OIL! YUM!
Respectfully, let's focus on the important issues before us, and the responsible approaches to address them.
Why give the Dems more talking points?
Venezuelans have no vote or ability to influence this at all.
Then again, increasingly I am realizing our vote here doesn’t really matter either
Incorporating a foreign nation into the US as a state is not something a president can do by himself. Thankfully so - Venezuela has been ruled by Communists for decades and the last thing the US needs is a state filled with Communists. We have California for that.
Trump seems to get excited about ideas like this for a few weeks, and then forgets about them. Greenland was going to be a US state for a while there, nothing ever happened with that except some mineral rights we could have had without the publicity.
Just treat it like NATO. Military bases and we will protect. Money and oil will flow protected.
Poverty?
The annual per capita GDP in Venezuela is $4,100.
That gets you maybe a week or two in California.
