California Democratic Party chair Rusty Hicks repeated his call for low-polling candidates to drop out of the governor’s race to prevent the possibility of a Republican advancing out of the June 2 primary.
On Monday, former state controller Betty Yee withdrew from the race, citing a lack of resources and voter disinterest in competency or experience, which she had built her platform around. She had been polling in the low single digits since launching her campaign two years ago.
Hicks told reporters on a media call that more Democratic candidates should follow suit as a party-commissioned poll showed a plurality of voters were undecided (20%) or favored the two major Republicans, Fox News pundit Steve Hilton (16%) and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco (14%).
The poll showed billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer and former Attorney General Xavier Becerra tied at 13% support, followed by former Rep. Katie Porter (10%), San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan (5%) and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (2%).

What happened to Swalwell?
Bitter much? Maybe running the state into the crapper wasn't the type of "competency or experience" voters were seeking.
Don’t worry. These results are well inside the “margin of cheating” Dems would use to get a candidate into the run-off.
RE: Dems uneasy....
More calls to do scandal hit jobs on also ran contenders?
They’d better hire more security.
Stop pulling our chain 🤣
Our only hope is for 2 republicans finish at the top.
Can this story be rewritten from the Republicans’ point of view?
“a party-commissioned poll showed a plurality of voters “ That word, plurality, is one no one uses correctly. Its definition is nebulous as is its usage.
Like in the Godfather, the Dems left Swalwell's head in her bed.
Maybe by the Babylon Bee, but not by the Sacramento Bee.
SomeSubstacks say They will Impeach any republican as soon as they are sworn in.
Now I'm wondering who they will go after next. One of the Republicans? That would guarantee there would be a democrat to vote for in Nov. Funny they are leaving Hilton and Bianco alone, must not have any good dirt on them.
Everyone says that the vast majority of CA voters are democrats, yet they can't find any willing to accuse a Republican, testify against him, sue him, do a tell-all interview about him. Are the Republicans that squeaky-clean, or are the voters that fed-up with the democrats?
The low polling candidates won’t make a dent. They really need to force out another high polling candidate. i expect they will go after each other with attack ads. Which of course will only benefit the GOP candidates. Sweet.
I have little doubt many such deals RATs can't refused are being done out of sight . Swalwell was the example created to send that message to the rest.
I’ve been hearing locally about Betty Yee for a long time.
Ms Yee is experienced at working with state pension funds since 2004, but now, toward the end of her Governor campaign, some Dems have started calling her ‘Boring Betty’ in reference to her ‘no flash’ public speaking style.
Betty considered that meant that compared to certain other Dem candidates for Governor, she is Drama Free.
Once again, she is always the Bridesmaid, never the Bride.
If Katie Porter ends up in the general, I hope a music truck follows her around playing “Mashed Potato” by Dee Dee Sharp until she goes into another vegetable dumping tirade.
Lol! Katie always seems to have a very short fuse before reaching out to grab something or somebody.
Last I heard early primary ballots mailed out did not even list a Republican in the race. What's the problem for Fornicalia?
Update: tonight they said Yee dropped out.
