Victor Davis Hanson: Trump, Beware—These ‘Unforced Errors’ Could Hand Democrats a Midterm Win
The Daily Signal YT Channel ^ | Feb 14 2026 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 02/15/2026 6:52:59 AM PST by texas booster

With only nine months until the midterm elections, Democrats will scrutinize every move President Donald Trump takes as they fight to reclaim control of the House and the Senate.

Victor Davis Hanson lays out the narrow road ahead to victory for Trump and the GOP during the 2026 midterm elections. History is not on the incumbent’s side. Messaging mistakes and unforced errors could shift key voters and hand Congress back to Democrats.

Hanson explains what it will take to hold a Republican majority—and why the stakes for these midterm elections could not be higher—on today’s episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: In a Few Words."

“There's another advantage that Trump has. They've raised, I think, $90 to $100 million. They've out-raised the Left by three or four times.

And the billionaire class of Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg, not to mention Marc Andreessen or Elon Musk, they have defected and it's really hurting the Democrats.

“What they're looking at in California with this billionaire's tax, you can be a billionaire and have property and investments, homes, but you might only have, I don't know, $100 million. They're gonna take $50 million from you on your aggregate worth.

That's not gonna go over well with the billionaire class. And there, that's just a foretaste of what Kamala Harris will do if she has a Democratic Congress.”

The GOP cna still win despite these unforced errors. But they will need Trump's help. Talk up the economy. Promote the Trump accounts for children. Brag about the border being secure and the crime rate plummeting.

He can also start by getting rid of Bondi and Noem and start prosecuting Democrats. But for crying out loud, stop the foolishness about Canada and Greenland.

““There’s another advantage that Trump has. They’ve raised, I think, $90 to $100 million. They’ve out-raised the Left by three or four times.”

That’s real nice but, as usual, doesn’t show up at the individual candidate level. People who donate to GOP candidates need to give *directly* to the candidate of their choice and not rely on inefficiencies like “WinRed” to eventually get around doing it for them.

A look at FEC campaign reports reveals that it’s business as usual for the House and Senate, with Democrats almost universally having more money — very often WAY more — in the states and districts where it is needed the most.

Money alone doesn’t win elections (if it did, Republicans would never get to even 40 Senate seats or 175 House seats) but it damn sure helps. Being outraised/outspent by an astronomical amount is hardly a formula for general success.

It doesn’t matter how much the Democrat Senate candidate spends in Wyoming (just like it doesn’t matter how much the GOP spends in Connecticut) because no amount is going to make any difference in the outcomes — but money matters a LOT in places like Georgia and North Carolina.

I agree with the problem with unforced errors, but after the left's temper tantrums over the past year, we should be able to win easily.

The problem is getting our side to show up in off year elections. I hope we learned our lesson in 2025 and show up in 2026.

The Republicans and the President need to start looking like the adults in the room.

AOC, newsome and all the libs going to Munich and other places overseas to start their campaigns are flailing badly. They need too be spanked with hard counter facts, not some cutesy online slop.

Also the Republicans need to tell masssie, paul, murkowski et all that they need to STFU.

Trump got rid of Sessions, and Rosenstein took over. Remember how obsequious Sessions was to Rosenstein?

“The Republicans and the President need to start looking like the adults in the room.”

Why do you link the President with Republicans, who oppose Trump at every opportunity?

When has Trump looked like a child in the room?

VDH always seemed like a brilliant guy but as he started appearing in every show on every topic, I think he got over exposed and spread too thin. Also, the conservative shows only want to hear the host narratives reinforced and I think he became a bit of a dancing bear.

Don’t need brilliance to know Trump does and says unconventional things that sometimes soar and sometimes backfire.

The sentiment is good. But one needs to see more. There are many individuals and situations being stood up to.

BUT THERE NEEDS TO ME MORE FROM EACH OF US ACTING LIKE ADULTS. WE ALL HAVE WORK TO DO.

It is silly to talk about “unforced errors” and “messaging” when all of the Media comes out of New York City and is against Trump.

Lots of criticism of the Quarterback when the Referees openly work for the other team.

Dems definitely made a mistake with putting up Cuomo (and thus letting in Mamdani) and allowing the public employee unions to put up the billionaire tax in California. Important people are really wondering if the Dems are still the nicer party of capitalism and Zionism.

But there’s little evidence that Republicans are prepared to make hay from this. Best case we can seize upon some disaster we can pin on lefty Dems, but eve that’s going to be tough in the competitive midterm races which are mostly very moderate-seeming Dems challenging - your prototype being a businessman with kids and a pretty wife who brought back a BS w/V from the sandbox.

I think it’s Trump’s mind set as dam the torpedoes full speed ahead. The GOP ‘leaders’ are too squishy. It’s on us. Will it work. In Calif it doesn’t matter what we do except to give money. I’ve handed out $200 so far to the hottie challenging Cassidy in La. and Charlie Kirks group-a hundred bucks each.

For the life of me, I cannot understand how the dems are always in the position of winning if there’s one slight error made by repubs!

The dems have done nothing but damage, ruined the economy, filled the country with criminals, stand for every freakish fad that’s going, and act like complete idiots with their meltdowns and temper tantrums. Yet, for some reason, they’re always in the position to take power!?

Yet the repubs, under President Trump, have rebuilt the country.....the economy, the military, law and order, closed border, etc. Yet if they make one false move, they’re out.

If there are that many Americans who actually want dems in control, with all of the misery and failure they represent, then I don’t know what to think.

He's got to get a handle on costs.

Sure, eggs are down but groceries are still expensive. Utility bills are expensive (thanks to data centers, but mostly thanks to various green energy scams). Rent is expensive. Homes are expensive. Cars are expensive.

Young people increasingly feel stretched and that the American Dream is out of reach for them.

But they will need Trump's help.

They get Trump's help because his agenda going forward depends on victory here.

Pass the clarity act for gawd sakes and keep people like Thom Tillis away from leading any reelection effort.

He’s also worked for a leading globalist-elite institution (Kissinger was there until his recent death) for a couple of decades now.

VDC has always been personally charming, but a day late and dollar short on the political front.
