COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — After over 45 years of uncertainty, the families of Lynn Vest and her 2-year-old nephew, Jeremy Pickens, finally have answers.
The pair disappeared in November 1980 after going out to run errands, last seen at Hamilton and Main in Whitehall, and were found dead in the trunk of Vest's car, four miles away at Kelton and Main Streets. The father of Vest, a CPD robbery detective at the time, had reported them missing.
Lynn had been strangled, and Jeremy suffocated. Missing from the scene were Lynn's credit card, some money, and her wedding ring.
On Friday, Columbus police announced the identification of Charles Elliott, a career criminal who died in prison in 2000, as the suspect.
"We've gotten to a point in technology that we were able to use two rootless hairs to come to an identification on the suspect, Charles Elliott," Sgt. Terry McConnell of the major case investigations unit said.
The breakthrough was made possible by a genetic genealogist who traced the hair back to Elliott through distant relatives using family tree searches. McConnell credited the original detective's attention to detail and forward-thinking for preserving the evidence.
Despite the identification, the case remains open as investigators seek to determine if a second person was involved. Columbus police said multiple independent eyewitness accounts identified two Black males in a white car following Vest.
Those witnesses reportedly placed the white car and its occupants next to Vest’s vehicle at two locations prior to the abduction and one location after the abduction. The final account from a witness near Main and Berkeley described a white vehicle as the one used by the suspects to leave the scene after abandoning Vest’s vehicle, police said.
Quite tragic. A rather cruel, evil crime.

Amazing. I would not believe it possible to get DNA from a rootless hair.

I’ve been in that area many times now. It is about 25% black with heavier concentrations in neighborhoods. All the fast food joints are majority black.
DNA has shown Detectives to save every scrap of possible evidence. You never know how future technology will be able to use it to solve the crime.
Watch enough Forensic Files or Cold Case episodes and you’ll realize it isn’t always “them”. Most white women who are past 30 & live in nicer areas are killed by their spouse, lover, ex, or a close acquaintance. And quite a few are killed by jealous rivals who are having a fling with the significant other and desire an open field.

I’m glad these old cases are being solved - and not forgotten. The families and loved ones left behind certainly haven’t forgotten - and will at least now have answers - not closure, there will never be closure.

Quite so. Many of these cases are only able to be solved due to diligent law enforcement officers collecting evidence and the evidence being preserved for many decades.
White women over 30 are just about the safest from harm and violence people in America.
If this was today they would have identified two men. In a very few years they will be identifying two persons.
Growing up in late 50’s/early 60s, I played Little League baseball on a team based in the black part of town.
As kids, we all just wanted to play and skin color never mattered.
In fact, I was chosen by the City of Dayton as one of the top amateur athletes and honored on a Sat.

It was the OJ trial that finally pushed me across the line after seeing all the blacks cheer the acquittal of a violent murderer of two whites.
