Starmer tells Merz and Macron that Nato must 'step up' Arctic operations as they scramble to stop Trump grabbing Greenland

Keir Starmer told his French and German counterparts that Nato must 'step up' operations in the Arctic today as they are frantically trying to stop Donald Trump seizing Greenland.

The PM discussed the brewing row over US threats with Emmanuel Macron and Friedrich Merz in a phone call.

European leaders have backed Denmark in a dispute with Mr Trump that has sparked fears the military alliance could be torn apart.

Sir Keir held a second call with the American president in just two days last night.

Downing Street said he had argued that Europe was defending the Arctic from Russia and China, but did concede that more could be done.

Sir Keir passed on that message about the High North in his discussion with Mr Macron and Mr Merz today.

According to the No 10 readout of the conversation, he 'said the Nato alliance needed to step up in the region to deter adversaries such as Russia'.

In a day of frenzied diplomacy yesterday, the PM spoke to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who previously said if the US chooses to attack another Nato country militarily, 'then everything stops'.

However, both agreed 'that NATO should step up in the area to protect Euro-Atlantic interests'.

Nato secretary General Mark Rutte agreed with Sir Keir that 'more needed to be done to deter Russia in the High North'.

Sir Keir then chatted to Mr Trump for the second time in two days.

No 10 said the leaders had 'discussed Euro-Atlantic security and agreed on the need to deter an increasingly aggressive Russia in the High North'.

A statement added: 'European allies had stepped up in recent months to defend Euro-Atlantic interests, but more could be done to protect the area, the Prime Minister said.'

This is ridiculous.

These people have never learned the wisdom of the advice to take Trump ‘seriously but not literally.’

US “grabbed” Greenland in 1941 and it was independent of Denmark at the time.

Anything related to Greenland since has been at the behest of the US which is still Greenland’s protector.

Denmark’s services are no longer needed.

The entire non-US NATO fleet would stand no chance. Even if the US sent not one surface shop.

This is absurd.

I think what’s going on is, Greenland is on a choke point for controlling the Arctic Circle and the entrance to the Atlantic. The way Europe sees the relationship, it’s entirely one way. The US is there to help Europe with the Russians. Not the other way around. Trump is forcing Europe to think about American security. What will eventuate out of this is Trump will coerce Europe into a significant presence in Greenland. According to recent sources the US has reduced the number of troops in Greenland. Does this indicate an invasion? If you thought the US presence in the Caribbean got coverage, imagine a similar buildup in Greenland. We’d hear the Europeans when we went outside to dump the garbage. Forget the internet.

There is no need to invade. We’re there in force and have been since the first days of WWII. It’s not an occupation. The US is a significant source of jobs and wealth to Greenland. If we wanted it a cash payment to each of the 58,000 residents would get them to vote for becoming a US territory. It hasn’t happened and it won’t.

This is classic Trump playing chess.

The alternative is Trump asks the Europeans politely to put troops and equipment in Greenland, and they thumb their nose. It’s not necessary as the US is covering that area. They have huge social benefits to pay for, which, bytheway, have always been subsidized by the US taxpayer. The US taxpayer is tired of Europe.

Since between all three of them they can barley field 20 combat ready brigades...I doubt the Russians or Chinese are very worried...

Just so I'm clear, the U.S. is not going to distract them with retail items?

As a side note, this will have the added effect of drying up and cutting down the power of the 5th columnist, “Atlanticist” traitors in Washington DC.

So NATO is allied against the USA now?

Wait, we're actually in NATO and fund it all. Let me know how that works out.

And just what is all that euro trash going to do about it besides pout and make whiny little noises? If president trump tomorrow morning makes the announcement that Greenland is now the 51st State, there is nothing the rest of the world is going to do. It might be nearing time again to remind the rest of the world that the US is never out-gunned. Sure, we would like to avoid this but too many pissants have forgotten their history it seems. Wish I had that pic of George Washington - “Americans. Willing to cross a frozen river to kill you. In your sleep. On Christmas. Totally not Kidding. We’ve done it.”

“What will eventuate out of this is Trump will coerce Europe into a significant presence in Greenland.”

You must not have any kind of intuitive grasp of Trump at all. Having Europe in Greenland would not enhance American security the least bit. Just the opposite.
