A Chicago Public Schools (CPS) policy allows illegal immigrant students excused absences if they or their family members are afraid of federal immigration enforcement activities in the area.
A document called Chicago Public Schools’ Attendance Coding for Safety Concerns Related to Federal Representative Activity, obtained by education watchdog Defending Education, affirms that illegal immigrant students can be marked as “excused” if a parent conveys to the school that they fear federal immigration authorities.
Immigration enforcement actions are dubbed “federal representative-related procedures” in the school’s policy, which was reaffirmed by the school board in February.
“If a parent/guardian reports an absence and attributes it to fear of federal representative-related procedures, schools CAN excuse the absence under ‘concern for student health and safety,'” the policy says. “In the memo box, ‘concern for student health and safety’ should be written.”
No specific details about the absence are required — just that a student’s health and safety might be in jeopardy — and the policy explicitly states that “CPS policy does not provide a time limit” on how long fear of federal immigration enforcement can be used to obtain excused absences.

Another provision in the policy allows students an excused absence if they want to attend a “Civic Event,” defined as “an event sponsored by a non-profit organization or governmental entity that is open to the public” that “includes, but is not limited to, an artistic or cultural performance or educational gathering that supports the mission of the sponsoring non-profit organization.”
“Chicago Public Schools is effectively telling families that fear of federal law enforcement is a standing excuse to keep children out of class with no time limit and no paper trail,” said Kendall Tietz, an investigative reporter at Defending Education.

Of course they. They are cheap labour and Democrats don’t want them to be economic competitors to the Democrat.
I taught for many years in a large urban school district (not Chicago). Our district gave students unlimited absences, excused or not.
Here’s the only difference. If an absence was excused, the student could make up any missed work.
So imagine that a student missed 5 days in a row, then came in with a scribbled excuse note from a parent (that happened quite a bit). I was required to give him all the work he missed. I didn’t mind doing that. It was part of the job.
But what was the chance the student could successfully make up the work, having not being in class for instruction? The chances were near zero.
The ultimate blame for this mess lies with the school district. Make the absence policy lax, and many students will take advantage of it.

If some Mexican kid graduates high school with a seventh grade education, he or she may still be better “educated” than his or her parents.
They should be made to sit in the school library all day Saturday as in The Breakfast Club.
But if forced to write an essay about their behavior the punishment will fail as 2025 high school students can’t read or write.
Vanderbilt University report:
“The report shows almost half of high school seniors are now testing below basic levels in math and reading, and approximately 35% are at or above a proficient reading level, while 32% of them had a below “basic” reading proficiency.”

Dear US Citizens: You must follow all the rules, and tax taxes, and if you fail, we will stomp on you.
Dear Illegal Immigrants: Have a nice day.
We can mail their Certificate of Perfect Attendance to them in their home country, then.
Aren’t those schools still getting Federal money even if those illegal kids don’t show up? Time to cut those funds to zero.
A sure way to have those children better educated then those whose absences trigger truancy enforcement.

Here’s the only difference. If an absence was excused, the student could make up any missed work.
And, as far as missing classes, what difference does it make? If they don’t kill or maim anyone, they all get the same grade in the name of “equity”.
Public K-12 education has largely become a joke. In the CPS, its a joke without a punchline.

We do grade it. It’s part of the job. And it’s easier than you might think.
And that’s because most of these truant students don’t hand in the work they missed in the first place. So there’s actually not a whole lot to grade.
You said that “Public K-12 education has largely become a joke.” I taught in urban public high schools. I can’t speak for anywhere else, but urban high schools are joke. A sad joke.
And the real victims are the good students. Even in my worst classes most of the kids were okay. But all it takes is one disruptive kid to turn the class into chaos.
Today’s administrators are all weak and woke. They prefer chaotic classes over disciplining students.
Evidently equal treatment under the law is not a democrat thing.
