After the 2013 government shutdown ended, Republican leaders made clear they had only been humoring Sen. Ted Cruz and his plot to defund Obamacare.
“It was not a smart play. It had no chance of success,” then-Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said.
Then-House Speaker John Boehner initially said the GOP had “fought the good fight.” But he would later say the plan “never had a chance” and even called the Texas senator “Lucifer in the flesh.”
This is how shutdowns generally go. The side seeking a concession fights what they view as “the good fight,” and then they give up when it becomes clear that it’s also a losing fight. Because, as McConnell has often said, shutdowns don’t work.
And maybe that’s how Democrats thought this one would go down. House Speaker Mike Johnson basically predicted as much Saturday, wagering Democrats might back down after Tuesday’s elections.
But a full month into the shutdown, it’s hard to see how Democrats can give up now. The politics of this have gone surprisingly well for them. And Republicans seem to be the ones struggling for a path forward.
Much can change as some of the biggest impacts of the shutdown start to hit this weekend and in the coming weeks. But we’re in a very different kind of shutdown this time — one where it’s much tougher to see the politics forming an obvious off-ramp......
Democrats would seem to have relatively little reason to back down — and plenty of reason to stick with their demands that Republicans come to the table on extending the enhanced Obamacare subsidies. Imagine a situation in which they have these seeming political advantages and they throw in the towel anyways. It’s not difficult to see that reigniting a backlash on the left.

1. Major unions (Dem Base) are calling on the rats to open the government.
2. The people who are going to be most hurt by not getting government money are more of the dem base such as SNAP recipients.
Article premise is pure delusion.
No, the Democrats are not winning the Schumer shutdown.
No matter what happens, the Democrats and the Media will declare victory.....................
(Democrats are winning the shutdown politics.)
Nice try, CNN liars.
😃😄😂🤣🤣🤣
Reminds me of how granny called Sherman’s march to the sea as “Sherman’s retreat to the sea”😂
Democrats will hold out until after the 5th and their color revolution schtick surrounding the WH on the 5th.
They are counting on election results on Tues to bolster morale.
Those are blue states and they predict wins. I imagine they will cheat and GOP will do as usual and not go vote in off year elections.
Laughable.
But, yes, Trump will get everything he wants. Democrats will get nothing. And Democrats and media will declare victory.
The military isn’t getting paid. No money for rent. I think the military man can slide because of the Soldiers and Sailors Act of 1940, but I’m not sure.
Miss Gina Gimme can drive her BMW to the food bank and get food.
She might cook two casseroles at a neighbor’s place using the neighbor’s food and kitchen and take one home to her family.
Welfare reform bills should be prepared in case the Republicans have to end the filibuster.
This means rethinking the health care and welfare systems.
They had the same strategy for No Kings Day, but got no mileage out of it. What’s rally cry will be next?
One proposal
Perhaps in exchange for saying capping SNAP benefits at $2/day/person, paid in daily so there is no monthly feast & famished cycle, the PPACA might have the original subsidy formula Obamacare the first six months of 2026, then Chuck’s subsidy formula the last six months of 2026.
Then phase Chuck’s formula out one month per subsequent year to eventually use Pelosi’s subsidy formula only.
December 2032 would be the last month for Chuck’s formula. By then, most PPACA recipients would have received some care and would see a need to pay a little something for health care cost coverage.
Within a few months of capping SNAP, the demand and federal spending for insulin and Ozempic would drop sharply.
Note for $28 (the weekly $2/day amount for two people), one can buy:
two pounds of chicken for ~$5,
four pounds of pasta for ~$4,
seven cans of vegetables for ~$5,
a gallon of milk for ~$3,
two loaves of bread for ~$3, and
a box of cereal (or a bag of fruit) for ~$3,
and still have ~$5 left over for say buying
a 10-pound bag of potatoes one week, or
a bag of sugar and 100 tea bags another week, or
a pound of butter and two boxes of store brand macaroni & cheese another week, or
12 eggs and two boxes of cake mix yet another week.
Democrats are not winning yet… but if Dems sweep Virginia and NJ Tuesday that could change things
CNN is a Democrat tool always.
You are right. The spin room will be at work if the Dems. win Tuesday. Maybe that was the Dems. plan all along.
Will there be looting on election day?
One proposal that I’ve made that might be agreed to.
I thought exactly the same thing. The writer is crafting a preferred conclusion. This will be of little comfort to the deluded when faced with reality. Trying to put lipstick on that pig is not going to help. The bottom line is that the shutdown has been condensed into a single effective bumper sticker. Vote for the CR.
And Johnson keeps hitting that anvil over and over again.
Vote for the CR!
Fed workers are calling Dems to open the government so I don’t see how this is a win for them.
> Welfare reform bills should be prepared in case the Republicans have to end the filibuster.<
I used to be against ending the filibuster for this until I realized the deMS-13s won’t hesitate to do it if they get back power. Do it now and they may never see a majority again.
