The threat of a U.S. government shutdown surged on Friday, as the U.S. Senate rejected a short-term funding bill to keep federal agencies operating after September 30 and then left town for a week-long break.
The lawmakers voted 44-48 to defeat a stopgap spending bill that would have kept federal agencies operating at current funding levels through November 21. The measure faced near universal opposition from Democrats, who demanded increased healthcare funding.
Republicans said they could vote again on September 29, just a day before funding is due to expire, when senators return from a break.

OMG’ those poor overworked Senators! Waaaaaah!
We are living in a dystopian hell.
Typical maroons.
“”Only 43 Republicans and one Democrat, Senator John Fetterman, voted for it, far short of the 60 votes needed to pass the Senate. Two Republicans, Senators Lisa Murkowski and Rand Paul, joined other Democrats and independents in opposition. Republicans were also plagued by absences, with eight members not voting.”””””
How many months of vacations have they had between the last budget and now? Get off your butts and do your job with a real budget, not yet another recycled Biden budget.
Theater.
Gets boring and predictable.
Like watching reruns.
Both parties need getting rid of. They have destroyed America. No more democrats! No more republicans!
I don’t know, seems SSDD.
Shut it down...
Things don’t really stop. Some parts just go on pause.
Its a scare tactic. Govt still keeps going and spending spending spending...
I smell another bloated CR coming.
Resign Johnson. Resign Thune.
If Dems had your small majority they’d ram everything they wanted down your throats and you’d ask for more.
They are all playing Trump. He has made it clear that he thinks a shutdown would be a failure of his leadership. It’s not and he should take up a different posture in my opinion but he does have a good feel for this so we’ll see. A shutdown seems ideal to me.
Congress are retarded and incompetent beyond belief.
No way they should be in charge of tariffs.
Who are the eight Republicans to skip the vote?
The story refers to the 60 votes needed to pass the bill. That means the dems are filibustering.
The first analytical filter on every “news” story on this should be whether it uses the words “democrat filibuster.”
So: the democrats are filibustering the budget resolution.
Will Trump fold under the threat of a continued filibuster that shuts down the government?
This has ALWAYS been the predictable endgame on Trump’s budget. If he folds now, he hands the keys to Chuck Schumer.
The democrats have assumed for decades that Republicans will fold. This is why the budget is totally out of control.
Will Trump hold Republicans to stand firm, or will he be the first to cave?
The new element now is that the democrat lock on the news coverage has been broken. This is a Schumer/democrat filibuster shutting down the government on October 1. Republicans need to stay on message and sell the truth to the public.
Most of which isn’t paying attention.
..... I don't know why we go through this charade ..... After all of the acripted political rangling and fighting ....... It always ends up in a Continuing Resolution anyways ....
.
Congress critters are a special privileged group. They can give themselves salary raises, retirement benefits, vacations.
Not many other people can do that.
*YAWN*
Dog & Pony Show, as usual.
Shut it down. Who cares? American Taxpayers BENEFIT from these shut downs!
We are in a Biblical Jubilee year.Expect the unexpected.
Leave it shut down.
Fund our military.
Fund Social Security.
Stop the checks on everything else.
“Wait, let’s all wander over to Lobby Street, and stuff our pockets first”. “Who’s that over there? Never mind them, just them deplorables. “
