Trump’s move against Iran may draw more criticism from MAGA’s anti-interventionists

President Donald Trump’s decision to strike three nuclear sites in Iran could deepen a divide among some of the Republican’s supporters, including high-profile backers who had said any such move would run counter to the anti-interventionism he promised to deliver.

Notably though, immediately following Trump’s Saturday announcement of the strike, some of those who had publicly spoken out against U.S. involvement voiced their support.

The lead-up to the move against Iranian nuclear sites had exposed fissures within Trump’s “Make American Great Again” base as some of that movement’s most vocal leaders, with large followings of their own, expressed deep concern about the prospect of U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran war.

With the president barred from seeking a third term, what remains unknown is how long-lasting the schism could be for Trump and his current priorities, as well as the overall future of his “America First” movement.

Among the surrogates who spoke out against American involvement were former senior adviser Steve Bannon, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., commentator Tucker Carlson and Charlie Kirk, the founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point. Part of their consternation was rooted in Trump’s own vocalized antipathy for what he and others have termed the “forever wars” fomented in previous administrations.

Trump will be fine AP dont worry. His party rarely is in lockstep with him but he just keeps winning.

Kirk acting like he supported it all along. And the Jew-hating HodgeTwins take the cake: opposing the strike on X and applauding it on Facebook!

In The Art of War, Sun Tzu wrote, “All men can see the tactics whereby I conquer, but what none can see is the strategy out of which victory is evolved.”
Sun Tzu illustrates that while tactics are more concrete and easier to see, an overarching strategy is equally important.

I agree. President Trump prioritized national security over potential political risks, adheres to his “America First” agenda, as called for by his supporters.

The turbans’ first acquaintance was weak sister Jimmuh.
Then a fellow muslim gave them pallets of Benjamins.
Then Joetato: “Don’t.”
This was a wake-up call for them.

I’ve already heard for calls to Zot certain FReepers critical of the bombing.

Which may be the most retarded course of action anyone here could possibly recommend.

Those of us who were around at the time remember a massive purge in the mid-2000s -- through banishment and self-exile -- of a whole bunch of outstanding Freepers who were adamantly opposed to the Iraq invasion.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, the most obvious consequence of that fiasco is that quarterly fundraisers that once took 2-3 weeks to complete now barely cover the website's expenses after three full months of solicitations.

Yes, over 20 years, FR has changed.

And guess what, so has everything else. Heck, even KISS released a disco song.

Lurking 20 years ago, what struck me was an almost dogmatic sentiment of Bush and Iraq right, everyone else wrong. Sure, the quantity of analytical posts was higher (somewhat…more on that later) but I saw a lot more Zots back then/. Parenthetically, I’ve seen TONS of FReeper confessionals since 2016 apologizing for reflexively defending Iraq and Bush, so going so far as to say that they wish they’d never voted for Dubya.

10 years ago, when Trump came down that escalator there were tons of anti-Trumpers. Even the old thread I posted, which was when Trump was the front runner (he didn’t catch fire until a speech in mid-July 2015) had a mix of pros and antis. If this had been a Bush thread in 2005, my guess is dissent wouldn’t have been tolerated. Many NeverTrumpers just left FR.

And the circle of life continues.

During the pandemic and thru to today, on FR you will find great articles on covid, the shots (or vaccines for those who consider these things released under EUAs without years of testing to be legit), health, nutrition, art, science, music, space…you name it. FR is a national treasure for those who relish the free exchange of ideas and information, with an owner and mods who keep the real scum of the earth out of here.

Prior to the bombing, FR evinced a very vibrant group of members that aren’t Trump dogmatists or pro-war neocons. I believe dissent is “tolerated” more now, and it’s more free-wheeling and less dogmatic. Maybe it’s a financial move as you suggest.

Let’s see what this cycle brings us.

So now we’re threatening to zot folks for remembering the promises Trump made to his base during the campaign? That’s insane.

The strength of FR is the demolition derby of the free exchange of ideas.

This is NOT the same as promising to not become involved in war. Why wait until after we have been hit? Also, I am sure the President has more facts than the Legacy Media has been told.
