PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Police arrested at least five people Monday evening during a protest at Portland State University (PSU) against conservative speaker Riley Gaines who spoke at a public event on campus.
"On Monday, May 5, 2025, at approximately 7:00 p.m., personnel with PSU’s Campus Public Safety Office requested PPB’s assistance with crowd control outside the Smith Memorial Student Union where an event not affiliated with the university was taking place. Over the course of the next hour-and-a-half, PPB officers arrested five individuals for various crimes. Once these individuals are processed, their names and charges will be disseminated," the Portland Police Bureau said.
Protesters took issue with Gaines talking about how she believes transgender women shouldn't play on women's sports teams.
“We saw that this was a mediocre man, that’s probably generous, actually. A less than average male swimmer competing at the Division One level in his rightful category, the men’s category, ranking in the 400s and 500s the year prior. Just 12 months later [he was] dominating. I mean, not just number one. Dominating," said Gaines while speaking at PSU's student union.
The student group that organized the Gaines’ speaking event, Turning Point USA, says on its website that Gaines is standing up for women by her stance that transgender women shouldn’t be allowed to compete on women’s sports teams.
"Our main goal for today is to demand that PSU stands against the anti-trans rhetoric that this organization and this specific speaker speaks about, as well as defending our transgender community and transgender peers,” said Finn Cunningham with Students for a Democratic Society.
We asked Cunningham what he would say to Riley if she were watching our interview.
"I basically want to say that you are against women. You are an active anti-trans spewing rhetoric against people that have done nothing to you other than simply want to be equal with you," said Cunningham.
A spokesperson for the university said in a statement that PSU is a public institution that supports free speech and free expression, even when the views expressed run counter to the beliefs and values held by many individuals in the community. And as a public institution, the university must stay neutral.
What good is tyranny if you can’t project it wherever you like?
I object to labeling this woman as “conservative activist Riley Gaines”
she is not a “conservative activist” she is just a woman who believes in sports fairness, just like probably 90% of everyone does.
Conservative activist? Try “advocate for women’s rights” instead. That’s a more accurate description.
Another newspaper labeled her an “anti-Trans activist”.
White liberals.
Neo-Nazis with a modern version of book burning.
There is no general "right to protest", since most nonviolent protests fall under the rubric of intimidation and harassment.
We really should start calling these people what they are —fascists!
They hate free speech and want to shut it down if they don’t agree...
Only good thing about this issue is we can point to this when people say women are as good as men at everything.
This proves that a man who is not in the top 100 can be at the top of women’s sports.
“...simply want to be equal with you,” said Cunningham.
Nope. That’s not what they’re about; they want to dominate, something they couldn’t do competing against their own gender. If equality was their goal, they’d compete in a class of their own kind, but that’d involve fair competition among equals.
Biggest mistake I made was not leaving Oregon after losing everything in the Almeda fire. Now I can’t escape this hellhole.
“Those two people in the middle pulling on the door look just like your typical college students. They must be 60 years old.”
I live in Oregon a manufactured home park filled with old leftist losers. You can’t imagine!!! Horrible neighbors who do nothing but bitch. I’m their favorite target with my flags and opinions. I was actually physically attacked by the psychotic manager for “stealing” my own mailbox when I took it to repair.
The golden years my white Irish ass. I’VE always said...Nothing. NOTHING is as dangerous as an old fat leftist LOON.
Militants. Wear a mask they said...
Thanks...
Freedom Road... it figures.
Portland State U blast from the past:
“...Stewart’s campus tours also led her to the Pacific Northwest where she made back-to-back appearances this April at Portland State University and Seattle University, with speeches at both stops focusing on her favorite target, John Ashcroft. In fact, Stewart’s website (www.lynnestewart.org) characterized the Portland event as “Portland State University: Lynne Stewart vs. John Ashcroft.”
The announcement on Stewart’s site calls this squaring off, “The fight of the Century, a fight for the soul of America,” and goes on in sophomoric style: “In the corner on the left, Lynne is wrapped in the Constitution and wearing a ‘We the People’ T-shirt…Attorney General Ashcroft is in your right corner wearing a legal robe and a necklace of electric charms, guns, clubs, wire-taps, assorted badges, and a magic marker poised to scribble out the First, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Amendments of the Constitution. The A.G. is being cheered on by a room full of smoke and mirrors, and by his manager King George Bush.”
The Portland State fiasco was sponsored by the usual medley of radical, Stewart-affiliated interest groups, including the Association of African Students, Americans United for Palestinian Human Rights, the Palestine Arab-American Association, Portland Lawyers Guild, and Socialist Action. If only Stewart could pick her juries from this fanatical collection of Marxists, anti-Semites and America-bashers, she would never lose a case....”
On the 1st anniverscary of the occupation of the PSU library and also the looting of rare books from it, according to a poster from the area:

Paint splattered on floors. Spray-painted messages and screeds covering walls. Furniture moved and overturned. Security cameras disabled. Fire extinguishers missing and entrances blocked by stacks of chairs.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us,” a facilities manager at Portland State University said Thursday as he examined the destruction left behind after a three-day occupation by pro-Palestinian protesters in Millar Library.
