PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Police arrested at least five people Monday evening during a protest at Portland State University (PSU) against conservative speaker Riley Gaines who spoke at a public event on campus.
"On Monday, May 5, 2025, at approximately 7:00 p.m., personnel with PSU’s Campus Public Safety Office requested PPB’s assistance with crowd control outside the Smith Memorial Student Union where an event not affiliated with the university was taking place. Over the course of the next hour-and-a-half, PPB officers arrested five individuals for various crimes. Once these individuals are processed, their names and charges will be disseminated," the Portland Police Bureau said.
Protesters took issue with Gaines talking about how she believes transgender women shouldn't play on women's sports teams.
“We saw that this was a mediocre man, that’s probably generous, actually. A less than average male swimmer competing at the Division One level in his rightful category, the men’s category, ranking in the 400s and 500s the year prior. Just 12 months later [he was] dominating. I mean, not just number one. Dominating," said Gaines while speaking at PSU's student union.
The student group that organized the Gaines’ speaking event, Turning Point USA, says on its website that Gaines is standing up for women by her stance that transgender women shouldn’t be allowed to compete on women’s sports teams.
"Our main goal for today is to demand that PSU stands against the anti-trans rhetoric that this organization and this specific speaker speaks about, as well as defending our transgender community and transgender peers,” said Finn Cunningham with Students for a Democratic Society.
We asked Cunningham what he would say to Riley if she were watching our interview.
"I basically want to say that you are against women. You are an active anti-trans spewing rhetoric against people that have done nothing to you other than simply want to be equal with you," said Cunningham.
A spokesperson for the university said in a statement that PSU is a public institution that supports free speech and free expression, even when the views expressed run counter to the beliefs and values held by many individuals in the community. And as a public institution, the university must stay neutral.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Air drop them into the main military compound for North Korea.
Those two people in the middle pulling on the door look just like your typical college students. They must be 60 years old.
Mob intimidation, harassment and violence are not protest.
Released yet?
Whoopi Goldberg said, that Riley Gaines should have trained harder , so she could swim faster to beat Will Thomas.
I think that’s ridiculous, but that’s the liberal mindset we are up against on this issue.
Since the liberals parrot the line that “transgender women are women”, and because for whatever reason all these LGBT ETC people are special in the liberal world, people like Whoopi have to take the position, that of course a man who thinks he is a woman should compete in sports against real females.
They need to stop calling these “protests,” as if its just a bunch of kids holding signs and chanting. These are riots where Antifa thugs, some of whom are professional rioters who aren’t students, engage in violence and intimidation to silence speech.
SDS...still around I see. It haa been @50 years since I heard anything about them. Good for Turning PointUSA for going into the belly of the beast, Portland.
And I just find it ludicrous anyone defends men in womens sports.
The real Fascists
SDS is still around? It looks like a charter member is near the door in the photo.
It’s time to take the Emperor Palpatine approach to these vermin. Feed the remains to sharks.
Portland has an army of mentally ill who can drop what they’re doing and get worked up at sanity infiltrating their weird utopia..

Anti-Trump protest and march remains peaceful in downtown Portland
By Joni Auden Land (OPB)
Jan. 25, 2025 6 p.m.
Protesters continued demonstrations against the second Donald Trump administration in downtown Portland on Saturday.
The demonstration, located at Terry Schrunk Plaza, focused mainly on the war in Gaza, but also the rights of women, LGBTQ+ people and undocumented immigrants. Some Oregonians are already concerned about how Trump’s promises to deport millions of undocumented immigrants could play out locally.

And they’re projecting their own tyranny onto us.
That’s absolutely right.
