Saudi Arabia Opposed Obama's Deal With Iran. It Supports Trump's. Why?
New York Slimes ^ | April 20, 2025 | Vivian Nereim. Leily Nikounazar contributed reporting from Brussels.

Ten years ago, when President Barack Obama and other leaders reached a deal with Iran to limit its nuclear program, Saudi Arabia was dismayed.

Saudi officials called it a "weak deal" that had only emboldened the kingdom's regional rival, Iran. They cheered when President Trump withdrew from the agreement a few years later.

Now, as a second Trump administration negotiates with Iran on a deal that might have very similar contours to the previous one, the view from Saudi Arabia looks quite different.

The kingdom's Foreign Ministry issued a statement recently saying that it hoped the talks, mediated by neighboring Oman, would enhance "peace in the region and the world."

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman even dispatched his brother, the defense minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, to Tehran, where he was received warmly by Iranian officials dressed in military regalia. He then hand-delivered a letter to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a man whom Prince Mohammed once derided as making "Hitler look good."

...Arab states including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar and Bahrain have all welcomed the talks, preferring diplomacy to an escalating conflict.

"These talks are gaining momentum and now even the unlikely is possible," Oman's foreign minister, Badr Albusaidi, wrote on X on Saturday.

The negotiations come against a backdrop of tensions across the Middle East, as U.S. airstrikes target the Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen and Israel continues its deadly bombardment of Gaza. Last month, Mr. Trump said he would bomb Iran if it did not reach a deal over its nuclear program.

Because Obama would pull out another red line when his was crossed, while Trump might actually go to war.

Heck we dont even know what Trumps deal even is..first of all, Iran lies..they can say “Yeah pinky promise we got rid of our nukes” meanwhile they have a crapload underground, you will never be able to prove they got rid of everything, because they are liars..and Biden gave them BILLIONS of dollars to let them produce as many nukes as they wanted

Not a foreign policy expert but just as a guess I'll say SA is concerned about Iran's belligerence. The fact that they will soon have nukes will only increase their paranoia.

Just like the Saudis used Bush to crush Saddam, the Saudis would use Trump to crush Iran. Bet they'd even throw in free jet fuel again.

_______

There’s no “might have very similar contours”. It’s utter fabrication to even suggest that the deals would be similar, with all the demands of verification.

Good to read this NYTimes snippet, SunkeCiv.  Amazing how Trump and his team are winning on so many fronts simultaneously.  So it is written, so it shall be done.

Archeologists 1,000 years from now will be praising the legend of the Great Leader Trump.  And an Earth-sunken but "surprisingly well-preserved" Make America Great Again hat will be treated as a sacred relic of America's "Revival of the Republic" Golden Age :- ).

Iran will actually have to give up things in a Trump deal

“Because Obama would pull out another red line when his was crossed, while Trump might actually go to war.”

I think it’s more that Trump is working with Russia to keep Iran from nuking up, as Russia is even more worried about that possibility than the US, since they’re virtually on Iran’s border.

I agree. Putin doesn’t trust Iran, Zelensky or China, but I bet he trusts Trump.

If the Russians were worried about Iran nuking up, the Russians, North Koreans and Syrians (and Chinese) would not have been working together all these years to assist Iran with nuking up.

You must be channeling Hillary talking points. Trump doesn’t trust the Russians. He’s not stupid.

The Russians and Iranian regime gets along fabulously. Just like the Russians got along with Assad, and with his Baathist fellow dictator, the late Saddam Hussein; and how they get along so well with North Korea’s regime that they allow North Korean soldiers into Russia.

Can’t speak for the others, but if Russia wanted Iran to have nukes, they’d have nukes in a week, so obviously, that wasn’t the case.
