Contractor pleads guilty to stealing homeowner’s jewelry

MANHEIM TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) — A local contractor has pled guilty after being charged with stealing jewelry from a homeowner.

The Manheim Township Police Department says that on March 13, a contractor was hired to work on a property on Fleetwood Drive. After the contractor left, the homeowner noticed a pair of custom diamond earrings in the bathroom where work was being done were missing.

The earrings were previously purchased for more than $9,500 and had a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) number to help identify the diamonds.

The homeowner contacted area jewelers to alert them of the earrings in case they were brought into a store. One jeweler reported the earrings were brought in for an appraisal and that there was security footage of the suspect.

Police say video from a security camera identified the suspect as George Hammer, the contractor who was hired at the victim’s home. A work order slip from the jeweler also contained Hammer’s information.

Hammer was charged with felony theft by unlawful taking and, according to court records, pled guilty on Monday to misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking.

Sentencing information for Hammer was not immediately made available.

I guess this thief would have stolen something regardless, but I don’t think I’d leave over 9K worth of diamonds just sitting in the bathroom - especially if I were expecting strangers to come into the house.

The earrings were previously purchased for more than $9,500...

...more than $9,500...

I bet they gave him a break and kept it under $10,000 so it wouldn't be a felony.

Smart enough to buy diamonds with microscopic serial numbers laser engraved on the girdle, dumb enough to leave them laying in front of a stranger. In the jewelry biz the eleventh commandment is, "Thou shalt not tempt"

Who in their right mind would leave expensive items accessible to complete stragers?

“Custom earrings were previously purchased for more than $9,500”

What a piker. I never spend less than $30,000 on earrings for my wife. But you should see what I spend on my girlfriend’s earrings!

Burglary...entering with intent to steal is a felony. I would think anything over $1K would qualify as grand theft.

According to the article he was charged with a misdemeanor.

I broke the rules and read it.
