The problem is, I think, that Putin wants the coastal ports in southern Ukraine to give him a strong naval presence in the Black Sea. Once Putin has warships in the Black Sea, he can go through Turkey into the Mediterranean and the sea lanes into the east Atlantic Ocean.

Right now, Putin has to go either through the frozen polar route, or through Chinese or Australian waters as he goes around southern Africa.

First, I'm surmising, but yes, he controls the ports in Crimea and everything south and east of the Dnipro River. Ukraine only has Odesa left.

I'm sure the Russian navy will make its way there now that he controls the territory. He won't convert the ports into naval construction yards. But he can supply his navy from there in the future and then have a military presence to the south of Europe in the Mediterranean Sea.

And then he can give landing rights to China at his Black Sea ports, which gives China the justification to sail into the Mediterranean Sea.

Russia is not going to give anything back on its own, and that's why Zelensky is stuck in yesterday. He's still holding out for pushing Russia back to the border.

Zelensky says he wants "security assurances" because he thinks Putin will continue to encroach on Ukraine territory. Trump says that the rare earths deal is a form of security assurance because Putin will now be attacking American national security mineral interests. Zelensky says Putin can't be trusted to keep agreements; Trump says Putin couldn't be trusted to keep agreements with Biden, but he's not dealing with Biden anymore.

I think that Trump wants Putin to give some territory back as a concession to Ukraine. Trump might demand that Putin exit from zones 1, 8, and 7 from the map above and then have Europe station some ships in that area.

We won't put troops there, that will be up to the EU now.

If President Trump gets the kind of deal he wants, we wouldn't have to. He wants to contain Putin by limiting his use of those ports to commercial shipping. If the EU can keep China out of the Mediterranean, Xi might lose interest in propping up Russia.
