VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Officers Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reese were working the midnight traffic patrol shift late Friday night when they noticed a car with an expired inspection sticker and attempted to pull it over.
After the driver of the blue Hyundai Sonata failed to stop, the officers continued to follow the vehicle into a townhouse complex near the intersection of Lynnhaven Parkway and Wendfield Drive, in the Green Run area, according to Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul Neudigate .
Both officers approached the car after it stopped and asked the driver to get out, Neudigate said.
The man, however, refused. He began to argue with them, and a “tussle” broke out, the chief said. It ended moments later when the man pulled a pistol from his pocket and shot both officers.
“The officers fell to the ground,” Neudigate said. “While on the ground, defenseless, he shot them each a second time.”
“We’re hurting,” Neudigate said during a news conference Saturday that was attended by several local and state leaders. “The department is hurting. The city is hurting. And if you know Virginia Beach, we’re a big city, but we’re really just a small community, and I can tell you this community is hurting.”
Neudigate said McCoy’s motive wasn’t known. He had a felony conviction from 2009, and if he’d been caught with a gun, he would have faced arrest and possibly another conviction for being a felon with a gun, the chief said.
“I think we all want to know (the motive) but I think only one person knows that and that individual is deceased,” Neudigate said.
Traffic stops are among the most dangerous situations a police officer can encounter, said Brian Luciano, a retired Virginia Beach officer and executive director of the Virginia Beach Police Benevolent Association.
There’s a reason patrol cars are called coffins. A lot of police officers don’t wear seat belts or take them off immediately after pulling someone over. If you ever watch Cops, you’ll see a lot of police officers touch the tail light of the car that they pulled over as it evidence in case, God forbid, something were to happen to them.
The usual person with low impulse control.
This is a horror.
BS
How sickening. As for the suspect, it’s a usual suspect:

Color me shocked. It’s imposssible to avoid a racist outlook when this happens so often.
Cops are neutered by the courts in performing their duties safely. These cops would be alive today if they were lawfully able to defend themselves.
But..... Derek Chauvin lawfully defended himself. And look where he is. For another 20 years.
What does the police car is a coffin mean? Back in the 1970s, the 80s and even the 90s, this phrase “the car as a coffin” was a warning, a cop-training-phrase, a “word to the wise” about being stuck in the car and being killed while stuck by an outside shooter.Jan 5, 2017
No need to apologize.
Cops really love to talk about their “sacrifice” but they are not as heroic as they paint themselves to be. At the end of the day police are only as good as the government that employs them. When you have a totalitarian government, you have totalitarian police. When you have a good government, you have good police. They are the armed enforcers of the government, nothing more.
There are many blue-collar professions that have a higher rate of injury and death than police officers yet we don’t hear the constant drum beat of stories claiming them to be heroes. Oil field workers have much higher rates of injury and death yet I don’t get constantly bombarded about how “heroic” they are. Police have a tough job and get great pay and benefits. That’s enough.
Condolences to family and friends of Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reese.
I’d like to see the video. Where are the cops standing side by side? And if so, why?
Prayers up for these two brother cops and their families.

Yep, I’m with you there. Over 40 years and I’ve never heard a patrol car called anything like that.
Too bad he waited so long to perform a late term abortion on himself.
If I were a cop, I would approach a car at that time of night only with my gun drawn and ready. Insanity.
“The suspect committed suicide. “
No matter. He could still be placed on the ground and shot again.
