California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order temporarily suspending landmark environmental laws to allow victims of wildfires to rebuild their destroyed homes and businesses faster.
Newsweek has contacted Newsom's office for comment via email.
Wildfires have devastated communities across the Los Angeles area, burning through an area larger than San Francisco and destroying more than 12,000 structures since January 7.
At least 24 people have died, and at least 100,000 remain under evacuation orders. Early estimates indicate the fires may be the costliest in U.S. history. AccuWeather, a private forecaster, has put the damage and economic loss between $135 billion and $150 billion.
On Sunday, Newsom signed an executive order that suspends requirements for permits and reviews under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the California Coastal Act for properties that were substantially damaged or destroyed in the fires.
CEQA, which was signed into law in 1970 by then-Governor Ronald Reagan, requires public agencies to regulate activities that may affect the environment.

When does an EO supersede legislative law? My bad, it’s Kalifornia, the test bed for US EO’s.
Note that nothing was done to enable construction of the desalination plants that are inevitable if LA and surrounding areas are to survive.
Just put it off a while longer as the cost continue to increase.
It’s only taxpayer monies!
Will he sign an EO to demand the immediate incarceration of squatters?? I just saw a reporter on Fox whose house survived the fire. She said people are concerned about:
1) the fire continuing to spread
2) looters
3) SQUATTERS “because you can’t get these people out of YOUR house!!”
Are they blaming Ronald Reagan for the fires of 2025?
With all the bureaucracy(fraud) I estimate the hit to the taxpayers to be twice that.
‘When does an EO supersede legislative law?’
ans: for as long as brandon or noisome or whomever can successfully stall it in court.
hope Trump now understands the new regime of lawfare. all ‘laws’ are now advisories pending court decisions in America.

“California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order temporarily suspending landmark environmental laws to allow victims of wildfires”
This will go to court quick.
The EO is against law.
Should be suspending CEQA so we can get some more dams built in California and start more reservoirs, but no, that’s not an emergency!
Agriculture uses 80% of the water in this State. If we convert excess vegetation in the Coast Ranges and Sierra Nevada into charcoal as a soil amendment, ag could save 10% of that water. That would increase the water available for developed areas so greatly desalinization would be unnecessary.
Political show and tell?
I will bet there is NOTHING in the Reagan legislation that blocks Gavin Newsom from doing anything necessary after a major wild fire.
yessirebob! the more hoops to jump through to rebuild, the more motivation to move to a state that takes wildfires seriously.
“When does an EO supersede legislative law?”
Pretty much every time Biden pulled out his pen.
Of course they are going to try to blame Reagan. Is he going to eliminate the water laws that dumps runoff into San Fran Bay?
I’ve made this same point in the past. They could have spent the $120 billion wasted on the high speed train to no where and have built desalination plants up and down the coasts using technology now in use in Israel.
They would have plenty of water to fill the reservoirs and for agriculture and could sell any excess to their neighbors in Arizona and Nevada.
Newsom signed an executive order that suspends requirements for permits.
Illegals open businesses.....................
Wonder what Home Depot stock is doing?.

Tree hugging whackos will be quick to protest against this
will demand anyone trying to rebuild will have to go through the years long bureaucratic torture before being allowed to do anything
It is a State law. So yes, he can override it.
Now, the question becomes with that out of the way, will Biden or Trump waive EPA regulations?
