New York City Needs More Cops But Applications Are Way Down
Hotair ^ | 01/05/2024 | John Sexton

New York City has lost a lot of police officers lately, to the point where the current number of cops on the job is the lowest the city has seen since around 1990.

The number of NYPD cops on the job this year and last is the lowest it’s been in more than three decades – with about 200 cops leaving each month, according to data obtained by The Post.

The current NYPD headcount is 33,695, just 154 more than last year — and the lowest since 32,451 in 1990, stats from the department and city Independent Budget Office show.

The problem is getting worse as retirements this year have surged 11%.

Mayor Adams is attempting to counter this surge in retirements by bringing in 1,600 new officers this year. The problem with his plan is that a lot fewer people want the job. Prior to the pandemic the NYPD had around 18,000 candidates interested in available positions. Now that number has dropped by half.

Prospective members of New York’s Finest went from 18,000 in 2017 to just 8,000 this year — a 55% decline, according to data from the Police Benevolent Association, the city’s largest police union...

The general rule is that one out of every eight candidates pass the test and meet all the other criteria. So to fill 1,600 academy slots, a pool of almost 13,000 candidates is needed.

In order to make up that shortfall the academy is reaching out to people who passed the required tests as long ago as seven years. But the really bad news is why the number of applicants are down. Cops are telling potential candidates to look elsewhere and avoid the NYPD.

“The biggest problem is that cops are telling their friends and family not to bother with this job, even as a stepping stone, because it’s not worth it,” a Brooklyn cop with more than a dozen years on the job told The Post.

“You’ll be worked to the bone, attacked by perps and politicians and hammered with nonsense complaints and ticky-tack discipline.”...

One Brooklyn cop who retired recently said he advises young people against joining the department.

“I tell them if you can find another agency that’s willing to take you I would go,” the 45-year-old said. “I would run for the hills if you can.”

Run for the hills is exactly what some young people interested in becoming cops are doing. County cops earn less money starting out than the NYPD but they also don't face the same pressures. As one NYPD cop whose son is going for a county job told the NY Post, "You don’t have to worry about getting stabbed, shot and then sued all the time."

Not mentioned in this story is the reason all of this is happening. Back in 2020 Black Lives Matter successfully turned a lot of mayors, city councils and regular people against the police. Since then cities that tried to defund the police have struggled with retention and attracting new officers. In Portland, which had nightly riots in protest of the police, the situation is even worse than in NYC.

The bottom line is that a lot of people who were doing these jobs, facing the threat of violence on behalf of regular people, did it partially because the job came with a certain amount of public trust and respect. Now that that's gone the job just isn't worth it for a lot of people. They'd rather seek out a less dangerous position in a place where police are still appreciated, i.e. not a big blue city. The decline in police applicants in NYC is a reflection of this reality. Blue cities are still paying a price for jumping on the BLM bandwagon.

I remember NYC used to have 40,000 Cops when Rudy Giuliani was Mayor. The change was nothing short of miraculous! The city was known as one of the safest big cities in the Americas.

How times have changed. Now the law is AFTER Giuliani himself, treating him like a criminal and threatening to take everything he has.

what’s the point? they let the crooks go if you catch them, and if you are not a black, woman, gay or trans you will never be promoted.

It would save time if they just sent the new cops to their Riker Island jail cells as soon as they graduate the academy.

I wouldn’t be a cop for love or money, especially in New York City. Who wants to have to deal with the scum of the earth day in and day out and risk your neck arresting said scum when the broken justice system will likely set them back on the streets? No thanks. When I was young I had an idealist notion of becoming a cop. Glad I spent my life in the fire service instead.

I know NYC is now desperate for Cop trainees, but they still better interview very carefully.
This would be a prime opportunity for some Venezualan Gang to begin sending gang members to apply for becoming a Cop, and having access to all kinds of weapons, plus getting trained on how to use them!

Didn't DuhSaintis have a job fair in NYC for extra cops ... that was what was advertised by the DuhSaintis movement way back when...

The decline in NYC police applicants is a reflection
of Democrats’ fool-hardy “defund the police” movement.

Blue cities are paying a price for jumping on the BLM bandwagon, as well.

Horrific TikTok shows mob taunting unconscious cop
flung from moving car trying to make arrest
The New York Post ^ | 01/05/2025 | Jared Downing
Posted on 1/5/2025, 10:14:37 PM by thegagline

A mob of gleeful onlookers laughed at and mocked a cop lying unconscious on the ground after he was hurled from a speeding car while trying to arrest a woman in Texas early Friday, disturbing video shows. The video from Beaumont first shows a woman running across a parking lot and hopping into an open convertible, chased by a police officer.

When the officer tries to leap into the car’s back seat to stop her, the woman hits the gas, sending the cop flying head-first into the pavement. As the officer — who suffered a serious head injury, authorities said — lay unconscious on the ground, a throng of young bystanders laughed and cheered. “Yo, yo! Police! Step on my man!” a person jeered as the convertible sped out of the parking lot.

Police later arrested the car’s suspected driver, 28-year-old Jamaysha Butler, who faces charges of Intoxication Assault and Evading Detention, both resulting in serious bodily injury to a peace officer, the Beaumont Police Department said in a Facebook post. The unnamed injured officer was rushed to a nearby hospital and treated for a brain bleed, although he is in stable condition, KDFM reported.

As the video made the rounds on social media, commenters joined in on the sick mockery. Beaumont police plays dead after woman smoothly escapes,” wrote the account @dallasglobaltv, which has more than 70,000 followers on Instagram.

How did being a Blue city cop turn out for Derek Chauvin? Have any of his chain of command been held accountable for their mistakes? The buck stops with the top, Governor Walz. Anytime a cop physically touches a resistent suspect that cop should be automatically relieved as the incident commander and thus we make sure that someone with a more objective picture of the big picture is commanding the incident. If nobody on the scene can do this then the dispatcher should do so, including alerting the chain of command to have someone respond and accept command. Folks like Walz don’t do this because they don’t want to admit how bad their staffing levels are compared to what they need in these cities and states. So they make the cops on the beats the scapegoats. And this makes the problem worse as the good cops flee to jobs in cities and States that value them.

In 2020......

“”The New York police commissioner announced on Monday that he was disbanding the Police Department’s anti-crime units: plainclothes teams that target violent crime””

Later, the leftist New York politicians bragged about being a sanctuary. Come one, come all!

Not even Snake Plissken could fix New York, or any other liberal city.

Just yesterday another Florida citizen protected his home by shooting dead an invader breaking into his home. There are wonderful Sheriffs all over Florida who state something close to: “”we will support anyone protecting themselves and their children from criminals.””

A city with 40,000 police officers is a den of Nazi totalitarianism, and shouldn’t even be considered American by any stretch.

During the COVID fiasco, I made the best decision of my lifetime and moved my home and business to a rural town with no police department.

Yeah. Blame the pandemic, not the fact cops get arrested and the perps go free
under the Adams administration for doing their jobs - if they are even remotely allowed to do so.

Wow. They threw out anything even remotely like standards DECADES ago. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel.
