Republicans Will Regret a Second Trump Term
The New York Times ^ | July 13, 2024, 7:00 a.m. ET | Bret Stephens

Posted on 07/13/2024 6:12:25 AM PDT by E. Pluribus Unum

Now is the summer of Republican content.

The G.O.P. is confident and unified. Donald Trump has held a consistent and widening lead over President Biden in all the battleground states. Never Trumpers have been exiled, purged or converted. The Supreme Court has eased many of Trump’s legal travails while his felony convictions in New York seem to have inflicted only minimal political damage — if they didn’t actually help him.

Best of all for Republicans, a diminished Joe Biden seems determined to stay in the race, leading a dispirited and divided party that thinks of its presumptive nominee as one might think of a colonoscopy: an unpleasant reminder of age. Even if Biden can be cajoled into quitting, his likeliest replacement is Vice President Kamala Harris, whose 37 percent approval rating is just around that of her boss. Do Democrats really think they can run on her non-handling of the border crisis, her reputation for managerial incompetence or her verbal gaffes?

In short, Republicans have good reason to think they’ll be back in the White House next January. Only then will the regrets set in.

Three in particular: First, Trump won’t slay the left; instead, he will re-energize and radicalize it. Second, Trump will be a down-ballot loser, leading to divided and paralyzed government. Third, Trump’s second-term personnel won’t be like the ones in his first. Instead, he will appoint his Trumpiest people and pursue his Trumpiest instincts. The results won’t be ones old-school Republicans want or expect.

:: Trump is a threat to America’s democracy and it’s glorious! ::

Quick correction...not “America’s democracy” but [their] democracy.

Big, Big, big sour grapes on you NYT. There is nothing that I want more in my life than his second term. Pardons for the J-6ers, restarting the wall, stopping this ‘parole-in-country’ for asylum seekers and forcing every executive agency to revisit each administrative rule they’ve make with specious connections to obscure statute. Firing EVERY US Attorney in the country, replacing the heads of every executive agency AND they next-down subordinate. Comprehensive rectal fiscal audits of every NGO involved in ‘immigrant’ support, removing GAS/EV mandates.....the list is so,so long and you, Mr. NYT can suck it.

Perhaps the NYT can give us all next week’s Lotto numbers while they are at it.

The author wishes and then writes it up as a column.

Trump was president for four years. He was tremendously successful. We don’t have to wonder at how he would do. The left are radical to the last degree, then now and forever. You can’t go beyond possibility. Trump is older and wiser and no doubt hell bent on settling scores. Handily the left have broken the law defied the constitution and run roughshod over reason and tradition for four years straight. Hewing to strictly the letter of the LAW Trump can jail a hell of a lot of malevolents.

Besides that :The left had damn well better hope that Trump gets in because if he doesn’t then Law and the ballot box no longer work for Americans.

The larger Trumps win the greater the chance that his coattails will drag some house and senate seats across the line to victory.

It would be nice to have house, senate and presidency starting in 2025. First order of business needs to be federal election reform passed ASAP while we still can.

Trump is actually moving center on social issues. He will not make the same mistakes like Comey and Sessions.
He understands the snake pit of DC a lot more and will walk into far fewer traps. There will be fewer leaks, and less backbiting from his Republican colleagues. He actually could be positioned to get a lot off good things done. His VP choice is critical for continuity as the person will be the frontrunner in 2028.

They are afraid of this Trump because their lies and disinformation will have much less effect, and he will be slashing and burning the useless government apparatchiks and programs. Media now is weakened and people don’t trust it. They cry wolf, and no one cares.

Sunlight helps him and he will bring to light the actual crimes that have diminished our freedoms for these last 16 years, from very high offices. Open the files and crush the Deep State. Enough is enough.
